sorry posted about this yesterday because my ds had a febrile convulsion. he got checked over at a and e and got dianosed with a viral infection. i have given him calpol at 7 then nurofen at 10 but his temp still remains at 39. he is in his nappy only. i dont know if it is ok for him to be left like this or i need to get him seen by someone. i am starting to get worried now because i dont want him to have another convulsion.

It's a really horrible situation: my ds2 had feb convulsions with a nasty chest infection when I was on holiday with him aged just 1. I still get agitated when he has a fever and he was up to 40C a couple of weeks ago with another chest infection.

How old is he? Give him more calpol and see how he goes, though I find calpol less and less effective, with brufen the only thing that makes a difference. If there's no change within 30 mins or so, I'd call your out-of-hours service and see what they say. All that A&E will probably do is give him over the recommended does of one or both of paracetamol/brufen, with all the extra stress for your son of being out of the house/getting other infections while in hospital. So give another dose and keep monitoring him. Thinking of you.

agree with jkkipu
give some more calpol

addictedtolatte · 17/12/2009 23:04

thanks jkklpu hes 18 months old. your right about the hospital i was there all night with him the other night and i was just surrounded by other children with infections. i will try some more calpol and see how he goes.

My friend's son just started suffering with this and her hospital gave her advice what to do the next time so def call your out of hours service for advice. It is very scary but quite common. The hospital reassured my friend with many things she can do.

Addictedtolatte - How is your ds today? I hope he's on the mend and you've at least been able to keep him cooler. Have you had any sleep yourself?

addictedtolatte · 18/12/2009 21:04

jkklpu thanks for asking about ds. he had another convulsion but i found out today he has an ear infection which is now getting treated with antibiotics. i can imagine he must be in a lot of pain with an ear infection. i havnt slept properly yet. i just sleep next to his cot like a guard dog. i will be happy when hes back to normal and i can have a few early nights.

Oh that's such a relief to have tracked down the origin. So sore ear infections, I remember from when I was wee myself and used to get them after lots of swimming. He'll know you're right there with him and that will give him comfort, I'm sure.

Might be worth asking medics for future reference: although it's not really done in the UK (at least not outside hospitals) whether they can give you any paracetamol/brufen that's administered rectally. It's by far the fastest way to get it into the system and bring down the temp. The Germans (was in Germany when my ds was ill a year ago) were swimming in the stuff and they gave me some to take home, as well as a rectally administered diazepam in case he ever had another convulsion.

Take good care of yourselves.

hi jkklpu ds is making a good recovery. hes eating me out of house and home again and running around being happy. i am so pleased. i had a long talk to the doctor yesterday about him having convulsions and she mentioned using diazepam if he continues getting them when ill. thankyou for your advice and take care

addictedtolatte · 19/12/2009 21:56

ilovemydog i even told them in A and E he had a dark discharge coming from his ear but they just didnt seem that concerned about it. how strange. i wish i would of pushed them more.

Oh please don't blame yourself! Really.

Isn't it amazing how quickly they recover given the right diagnosis?

Happy Christmas to you
