worried about DS's health

about 2 weeks ago my DS started daycare (he is 11 months). by the second day when i picked him up i noticed that he wasn't quite right... by 5am the following morning he was screaming the house down and continued doing so until i took him to the GP at 9am. the GP told me he had an ear infection and gave me antibiotics to give him 3 times a day and suggested i use Calpol and Calprofen every 4 hours - to alternate them every 4 hours. so i followed instructions but DS only got worse. he got fever, diarrhoea and vomiting. could not hold anything down. after a few days he got a severe nappy rash. so off i went to the GP and was given timoden to use 3 times a day. by following wednesday he was still not any better... constant screaming and crying and everything i have tried has not worked! took him to the GP again. she told me to keep doing what i am doing and that its most likely some kind of virus.

I even caught it myself - and i'm pregnant so cant take much for it... but same symptoms as him! it has now been almost 2 weeks and just when i think he's getting better he gets fever again. the vomiting and diarrhoea have been constant, and he has lost weight. the nappy rash is better but its not going away because of the diarrhoea. i've put humidifier in the room with olbas oil and used a bit of vicks vaporub on his chest, as he is also very phlemmy with runny nose and coughing. i will take him to GP again tonight, but have no faith that they will tell me anything i dont already know.

would love some advice about what others have done to soothe their little one. i dont like seeing him in so much pain

Aww bless hope you've had better luck with your gp this aft and your DS is feeling better! If the antibiotics haven't settled tempreture is more than likely it is something viral, and they will have aggrevated the diarrhoea.
I think if this was my DS i'd be wanting my GP to refer him on to hospital if the diarrhoea and vomiting constant, he could be getting dehydrated, are you managing to get plenty of fluids into him and is he still having wet nappies? Really hope he's better for you soon! hang in there sounds like you ve been doing everything you can x

thanks scarymoo spoke to the gp and she told me to get a saline nasal spray, otherwise she said the vomiting and diarrhoea is normal.

he had a little bit of solids today but as soon as i give him milk he throws it back up. this evening we gave him a bath with some olbas oil in the sink in hot water. gave him some cough medicine and a bit of vitamins and straight after he had a bit of milk he threw it back up! his nappies are dry and he looks exhausted! he refuses water also.

the gp said it was viral and it was his first cold so it would be worse but the fact that he cant keep fluids or food down has me worried..

Did GP give you any rehydration salts? Will he take water? Milk is quite hard to keep down when ill in my experience.

Have you tried him with his absolute fav food? My DD once ate nothing more than bananas and chocolate buttons for a few days.

For nappy rash, try traditional zinc and castor oil cream and metanium, when it clears up we usually go back to using waitrose bottom butter as a barrier cream - it's lovely! Hope he is better soon, when my DD started nursery she had loads of sickness too, it does pass - eventually! Her first Christ

Oops, pressed post by accident!

Her first Christmas she had awful D&V, followed by chicken pox over new years ever. Nightmare.

If he is not having any wet nappies at all and doesn't seem himself then I would be tempted to take him to hospital, dehydration can get serious quickly at this age, have you checked against signs of dehydration?

? Has not wet any nappies for six hours or has wet fewer than six nappies in a 24-hour period:

? Has persistent dark yellow urine

? Has less energy or is less playful than usual

? Has a sunken fontanelle (soft spot)

? Has a dry, sticky mouth and lips

? Isn't shedding any tears while crying

If your child continues to lose fluid, she could become seriously dehydrated and need intravenous fluids. If you see any of the following danger signs, get your child to a doctor straight away:

? Sunken eyes

? Hands and feet that feel cold and splotchy

? Lethargy

Hi,
Hope your little one is feeling better soon - but keep off the milk!! In my experience with my 2 little ones whenever they are D&V the worst thing you can give them is milk as it curdles straight away and comes back up.
Just lots of water and whatever solids they want. Toast and dry cereal are good.

Hope he's better soon - its horrible to see them so poorly isn't it.

today he refused fluids.. i had to give him boiled cool water from the medicine dispenser! refused drinking water out of the bottle but when i tried him with milk he eventually took some. (he hasnt brought it back up yet)

he is dehydrated. very lethargic. all he wants to do is lie on me and be held... but am worried that he'll get too attached - he's already getting jealous if his dad gets anywhere near me

will try him with rehydration salts this evening. his cough seems to have calmed down and the last time he had diarrhoea was very early this morning.

thanks for the advice on the milk, i never even thought of that!

dioralyte relief (strawberry, raspberry and blackcurrant....tastes better than dioralyte)is probably better than plain dioralyte as it has rice in it which wil help get rid of crampy stomach pains.
