My 10yo DS has to have some teeth out under GA, plus a tooth "exposed" and fitted with a "tow bar brace". It's day surgery and he'll be in at 8am and out around 3pm so nothing too serious.

He's read the stuff from the hospital which although meant to reassure has alarmed him (and me!).

Can anyone give me some hints as to how he might feel, and how we can help, both during and after. We've been told to get mouthwash in, plus some liquid pain relief, but apart from that not much more advice has been given. What is good food for him to eat - I want to be prepared!

I think I'm probably transferring my fears about it to him (I've had lots of surgery and don't react well physically) and am worried on his behalf so some calming advice would be much appreciated!

Which part has alarmed him? My dd had grommets done last week. She returned to the unit at 1pm on Monday afternoon and didn't stop vomiting until the next day. It may just be custom in Switzerland but they hadn't given her an anti emetic. I'd ask about that and pain relief.. As far as food goes, whatever he likes to eat I suppose. Soft stuff would be better so soup, yoghurts, eggs minced meat etc. Good luck to master fingers.

Thanks for that - I think having seen it written down in black and white made him pause, I'm not sure he'd really taken on board what was being done when it was explained. He was worried about the injection, but I said that they would use the gel first so it wouldn't hurt when the needle went in. He also said that what it would feel like afterwards bothered him. I've tried explaining that it'll be uncomfortable and a bit sore for a few days, but he's not convinced!

The only plus for him at the moment is that he'll have a day off school, plus a couple of half days for follow up appointments! The lure of having nice even teeth doesn't really do it for him atm!

Thanks again for your advice Kreecher & Herbie, it's always nice to have reassurance!
