Any medics around? Suspected Scarlet Fever but no antibiotics?

Ds came down with temperature and very sore throat last Monday. By Wednesday he had a pimply rash all over his torso and on his cheeks. Took him to gp who said it could be Scarlet Fever and took a swab. He is now well in himself though tired but has not been at school as they wanted the swab result first. Swab results say 'no significant growth' and doc says it could have been a mild case of Scarlet Fever but as he's well not antibiotics are not necessary. I'm worried about the complication of Rheumatic Fever if not treated with antibiotics. He still has the pimply rash though it is slightly improved. Any advice please? Really don't know what to do.

I think he is prob over the worst.from what I know complications occur in certain people who are genetically predisposed to it like I was.

yes but as I have auto immune stuff going on makes me worried. Did you have any lasting damage noddy?

I did but I had post strep complications and would probably have had them with or without antibiotics according to the dictors but with ds I got them anyway. What autoimmune do you have?Does your ds have any other health issues\/

I had a weird bout of severe arthritis six years ago when all my joints swelled up. Lasted six months. They thought it might be rheumatic fever, then lupus, but it went away. Sorry to hear about your problems. Ds very healthy up to now. Do you have to take long term meds for it?

Yes I had post strep kidney failure and rheumatic heart damage.I have had 2 renal transplants very rare.i am on immunosuppression.I am unwell atm which is a pain but generally i am healthy My auto immune status is undiagnosed as I had already had a transplant and started drugs so a diagnosis was not possible.

Oh noddy that sounds very hard for you. My worst nightmare for ds obviously.

the skin on his fingertips is peeling like crazy now. I feel very cross that it was not diagnosed and treated earlier, and very worried about ds, it is obvious what it is now.

I am sorry for you I know that fear. When ds had it i couldn't sleep and kept peering at him looking for 'signs'!Try and relax it is so rare iwas like a museum exhibit for medical students and even a heart consultant in his 50s came to listen to my heart as he had never heard a real rheumatic thrill in all his career. How is he in himself/

He is better now thanks noddy. He was very ill Tuesday. I just don't understand why they didn't err on the side of caution and advise antibiotics sooner. Then i wouldn't have this worry. I'm glad your ds was ok.
