Cough in 2yo - ignore it or see GP?

DS(2) has a horrible cough but I don't know at what point it needs a GP to check it out. He has a bit of a runny nose and is a bit warm despite having no clothes on for the last hour (but he's not really hot so I don't know if that counts as a fever or not!) He never gets a cough when he has a cold so should I take him to the GP?

I think it's chest infections that worry me - I have no idea how you tell the difference between a cold with a cough and a chest infection.

I did the NHS Direct thing but that wasn't much help (mainly 'cos I didn't know if his temperature was a fever or not and don't trust my thermometer).

my ds2 has had a cough for the past few days but not took him to the docs ,as its just a tickley cough, got some med from boots and its nearly gone ,im not taking him to docs as hes just had a course of anti bx if you are worried about him ring the gps

I should add that he is fine in himself and is still active and giggly. It's a really barking cough that sounds like he's going to be sick (but he hasn't been).

Good idea about ringing the docs, sprouts - hadn't thought of calling them, thought you could only go in person.

We have the same here. That barking cough where it sounds like he is about to be sick.

NHS direct said it should go in 7 days so if he isn't better by Friday I'll ring the GP. Our GPs say not to bring them in just incase it is swine flu.

we have it here too, i just did a thread saying looks like poor old dd7 wil miss doing here nativity this yr.

It's been on and off for a few days, but my god it kicked in last night. barking and sounding like she was going to be sick. I think she slept better than me, cos i kept thinking she had been sick.

Oh, your poor DD piratecat I hope she makes a miraculous recovery in time! There are always so many kids ill at Xmas - my DD missed her school Xmas party last year

I think we should have Xmas in summer instead
