...it's just a cold, isn't it? He's been congested and a bit husky for a couple of days now but otherwise was fine and more or less himself (although refusing most food) until half an hour ago - he woke up very disturbed and he was glowing with heat. I used an ear thermometer and the highest reading was 40.2. It hasn't been that high since he was really ill with Hand Foot and Mouth when he was 7 months old, so it's scaring me somewhat, as he's otherwise not given to running a high temp when unwell.

His snot is making him breath through his mouth and he was breathing pretty fast when I put him down again (because of the fever, I presume?) but although I can hear the phlegm and so on, he's not having breathing difficulties, I think. just very audible!

If we weren't in the midst of a pandemic I'd presume it's a cold, but now I'm paranoid. He's had Calpol, he's had a little bit of breastmilk, he's more or less asleep but disturbed still. I just feel very uneasy.

I'd be really over-reacting to ring NHS Direct, wouldln't I? No vomitting, slightly loose nappies (have been for a few days), no nasty rash, don't think he has a sore throat. WWYD?

After not realising how ill my DS was once and he ended up going to hospital after a fit (was a febrile convulsion but I'd never heard of that) I would take NO chances and always seek advice. I think NHS direct are wonderful and they will never think you are wasting there time for a sick child. Ring them and see what they say.l

He went downhill again today - had breathing difficulties with all the phlegm, and started going floppy in my lap and rolling his eyes. I was terrified - he really seemed in a bad way. Took him to GP's right away and we're a bit more reassured now, but I forsee a long night ahead...
