It is next to her front tooth. No sign of tooth anywhere so think she may have swallowed it. Has been bleeding pretty badly all day , but was subsiiding before bed. Have been trying to compress a much as she will allow.
Feel sick will she need xrays does anyone now ?
Will her adult tooth still come through

I've no idea how to answer your questions, Lily, but I'm sorry you've had a rubbish day. I hope the dentist tomorrow goes well.

differentnameforthis · 07/12/2009 22:06

At her age I would be very surprised if it affected her adult tooth.

She may need an xray, but that usually depends on dentists, some take, some don't.

Important thing is to keep as clean as possible. Even if you have to clean the area with a hankie (no tissues, kitchen roll, cotton wool as it all breaks & can get into the hole).

Soft diet for a while, to help it heal & to cause her as little discomfort as poss.

You may notice in time that the tooth next to it goes a little darker, such a bash can affect more than one tooth. If it does go darker it means that the nerve supply has died. Nothing really to worry about, dd did this & it gives her no trouble at all!

Good Luck!

Hey Lilly oh im so sorry for dds accident. Yes her adult teeth will still come through she will just be gappy for quite a while. DH's son knocked his front teeth out slipping in the bath about this age but he has strong front teeth now. I hope you all get a good night sleep. It will all seem better in the morning. xxxx for your little girl.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 07/12/2009 22:21

Have vast amount of experience in tooth 'smashing' situations.

DS1 while 3, was mucking about with DH and managed to bash his front teeth on a tiled floor, snapping them both off halfway, leaving stumps.

He then went on to hit the stumps and detach his top lip from his gum at pre-school after slipping on a tree stump, then a few months later, tripped out my Mum's front door landing flat on his face on the concrete step (he was wrapped in a blanket pretending to be a sausage so couldn't put his hands out to break his fall) which finally loosened one of the stumps and caused the root to poke out the top of his gum iyswim?

So..... I know what sort of day you have had and totally feel for you as it DOES look horrific.

The first time anything happened, we saw an emergency dentist who basically told us they are milk teeth and don't matter - they have no nerves so shouldn't cause any discomfort and the jarring would probably not damage the tooth behind.
He has managed to bash them twice more since then, as above, so am a bit worried now tbh that he may have damaged the other tooth behind. The second time I took him to A&E when I picked him up from pre-school I asked the dentist we were referred to if they would take them out as he seems accident prone in this dept and without stumps to knock the other with, surely he would do less damage if he did it again, but they were not too interested as it would mean having to have him sedated.

Thing is, they have since gone rotten as they are snapped so open across the bottom, look awful and actually smell.

Bit of an essay, but want you to know I have been in similar situations and all the blood is awful and the swelling, but, all the blood supply to the area means it heals incredibly quickly too.

Hope your DD is better soon, poor mite. x

Oh dear, poor little thing and poor you too Lily x

LadyOftheflowers- I would find another dentist. It sounds awful to leave a child with rotten stumps in his mouth. You may either have to insist on a hospital referral or find a private dentist.
I grew up with dental stories at the table every night- my dad is a dentist and I have never heard of such a thing.
Normal practice is to remove the stumps and follow up to make sure the adult teeth come through ok.
Best wishes

Lilyloo - for you and M.

J did the same thing although he was a bit younger.

He was about 13mths and just walking. he fell face forward onto the leg of his tchibo wooden highchair and front tooth came out root and all, although he did nor swallow it.

he did not need to go to hosp though as although initially lots of blood, it stopped v quickly.

He was on pureed, mashed food for a while. Under guidance of dentist.

He is now 4 (as you know!!) and has gap at front. Dentist says his adult tooth when it comes through may be slightly discoloured at the top due to trauma and he may need some of the scar tissue from top of gum cut away to help adult tooth come through iyswim.

Hope you and M recover soon...

Thanks for all your comments and for all your little ones who have had worse injuries!!!
She looks a sight for sore eyes today. Black eye , swolen cheek and two fat lips.
However she slept fine last night , still bleeding though as blood on cot sheet.
We back from dentist and she said she will see her again next week. Didn't need x ray as she said it has come clean out so soft diet and lot's of tlc. Apparantly normal for baby teeth to come straight out when having blow as the root isn't as deep. She doesn't see why her adult tooth won't be fine also.
So gappy photos until it comes through.
TBH am not bothered as long as she is ok. I feel terribly guilty however even though i couldn't have done anything about it.

Any tips on how to clean it ?
It seems a bit smelly this morning , which i am presuming is the old blood ? She let me gently clean her teeth with tooth brush and i glided over the hole but should i be cleaning it with anything ?
TIA

I think gently using a t/b is usually enough. And brush the are after eating to prevent food stagnating there (can cause an infection)

The smell could just be the blood, but just keep an eye on it, as smell can = infection. So if it gets really powerful or starts to look like there is a yellowy discharge, take her back to the dentist.

LilySwalLoosHerTurkeyBaster · 10/12/2009 21:13

Thanks different , have been brushing it again today , still a bit smelly but not getting worse iyswim
We have to go back to dentist on Tue anyway.
Will brush after food though , never thought of that
