Nit combs etc

I am arming myself for an infestation, since the blighters seem to be doing the rounds at school/nursery.

But I'm new to all this, so has anyone got any handy hints? I'm planning to buy one of those nitty gritty combs and doing the conditioner/wet comb thing on all of us.

Am itching just thinking about it...

A few drops of tea-tree oil rubbed into the scalp is supposed to keep them at bay. You can also buy the Vosene anti-nit shampoo at Tesco (havent used it though so dont know if it works).

I always found that those 10-minute solutions (Lyclear was my favourite) were a godsend (when you spot a little blighter just as DC is getting ready to go to a party), and used them on myself on more than one occasion.

The wet combing thing is labour intensive, but it does work. Provided you keep on top of it (like, every 2-3 days). I've had the DDs go into school with clear hair and come home with what looked like mini cockroaches in their hair because some parents just wouldn't treat That's when I'd zap them with chemicals, hope they hadn't had time to lay eggs, and carry on with the wet combing.

I tried the oils but soon gave up - leaves the hair looking and feeling revolting.

Oh, it was lovely once DDs reached an age they could do the wet combing themselves...

Tea tree oil doesn't work - dd1's school has a real problem with nits. As soon as I get rid, the buggers are back with a vengence. Have been fighting them since beginning October. Most solutions are rubbish too. Get a nitty gritty and wet comb once a week to check. If you spot one, start doing it every couple of days.

Why why why don't people check their kids hair!!! It drives me nuts!

Right - thanks everyone!
Found a couple of lice and some nits on DS2, but nothing on DS1. And that was after about 45 mins of combing on each (their hair isn't that long) so hopefully that's stage one complete. Will repeat again tonight - and get DH to check me.
But yes - it is so frustrating! After all that effort I can send them to school and have them re-infested. Aargh.
Think I'll start investigating chemicals just in case.
