10 month old with swine flu and bronchiolitis

took my 10 month old little girl to docs 9 days ago (fri) with a cold and temp she diagnosed bronchiolitis and sent her home and said take her to A&E if she got any worse, then on monday i took her back to docs with same symptoms but she was really wheezy and breathing very fast, he sent her home with ventilin syrup which didnt work, the morning after she was even worse so she was taken into A&E where they too diagnosed bronchiolitis, they also did a test for rsv bronchilitis and swine flu which both came back positive. they let her out again a day later but i took her back in only to find her oxygen levels had dropped to 88 but they let her out later that day with a salbutamol inhaler and she wasn't drinking or feeding properly. obviously i'm slightly concerned now as a few days have passed and she is only having a few ounces of fluid a day- they are making me sound like a paranoid parent and i feel im wasting there time. is this an acceptable amount or do i need to start insisting i want something done. its breaking my heart seeing her gasping like this and not feeding but the docs dont seem bothered. sorry its long but any help would be great.

My ds had 7 bouts of bronchiolitus last winter between the ages of 5 months to 8 months, he was bad but never as bad as your dd, i would def take her back to doctors and demand a second opinion if they fob you off again, you need to force her onto the childrens ward, if for nothing else but a drip to get her hydrated again.

If it was me I would take the poor wee sausage back to see someone tomorrow. It can't do any harm and because she's so little I don't think you should worry about bothering them. Obv it's a good thing that they don't seem too worried but you need to ask them about the fluid intake, even just for your own reassurance.

Have you had her in a steamy bathroom? Or maybe get her one of those machine thingys I forget what they're called I'm sorry.

If it was my dd at this age I would be looking to see someone today. 10 months is still a small baby and it sounds like she is struggling to breathe. Like poppy said I think she needs to be in hospital.
A few ounces a day ongoing is very little.

My dd1 has asthma and I have seen her with oxygen levels of 83% - it is scary. When she is like this the nurses have told us that the meds are not enough she needs oxygen and once she gets it you can see an immediate improvement.

You sound worried - go with your instincts and have her seen again.

Swine flu and bronchiolitis in a baby this age is not nothing. Be firm.

Best of luck.

Sorry I disagree Besom.

I have just bought my 6 month old ds home from hospital yesterday after four days with bronchiolitis.

He was on oxygen from the moment we were admitted to the morning of his discharge. At his worst his oxygen levels were at 86, he then started to get better in himself but his oxygen levels didnt immediately improve so he was kept on oxygen.

He was finally weaned off the oxygen but was not allowed home until he could hold his own at 94 which took some time.

The oxygen levels drop dangerously low whilst baby is sleeping and this is when they are at their most vulnerable.

I am not a doctor but I would take her up the hospital now and insist that she is seen and admitted - I believe she needs to be on oxygen.

Totally agree with thirdisbest.

Take her to the hospital now.

thirdisbest · 06/12/2009 16:27

Good luck. You are doing the right thing.

suiledonne · 06/12/2009 16:28

Let us know how she is when you get a chance.

sanfairyann · 06/12/2009 16:28

take her back tonight - you will only worry and it is quite possible that she's got worse than she was when ok to be discharged if that makes sense? mother;s instinct - you should act on it
hope shes soon on the m end

rachselby25 · 06/12/2009 16:28

How did you get on?

rachselby25 · 07/12/2009 20:45

they kept her in overnight and let her out this afternoon. oxygen levels down to 89 again so they gave her nebulizers and oxygen. had another chest x-ray done. given her a course of antibiotics as there were crackling noises on her chest. she was also on a drip as she was starting to become de-hydrated. seems to have percked up at tea time so i just hope she stays like that. she was given 48 hrs open access so i feel a little re-assured. fingers crossed

Thats good. You did the right thing taking her in. Hopefully she is well on the road to recovery now.
