Any GPs out there? Query re: o2 sats.

DD (3 years) has been admitted to Children's Hospital this morning . She is prone to asthma which I thought we had under control, but took her in this morning as her breathing didn't look great and her O2 sats were 86% so she was put on oxygen

Obviously I felt like crap mom, despite A & E docs saying I couldn't have known, but how can one tell?

Sorry to hear DD is unwell and hope she is on the mend soon.

The answer is you did tell. You saw her breathing wasn't as good as normal and you took her in so she could be properly assessed, sats are only part of that and sometime even we get a surprise! You did the right thing

Also sats readings are not 100% accurate especially on little ones, there are so many reasons for a reading like that.

The best thing to do is look at the chest, how fast is she breathing, does the breathing look difficult for her, what colour is she, look at lips, fingers and general colour.

You did good girl, what any one of us would do, well done.

Thanks for all the advice. She has pneumonia after they took an x ray.

It's a really good point about her 'tummy hurting' because she was complaining of this, and I just thought she didn't feel well because of the chocolate brownie I gave her.
