CT scan

Ds (6) is booked in to have a CT scan on his arm. In the rush to leave the consulting room (ds was being really fidgity) I didn't ask exactly what a CT scan is like. We've had endless x-rays and I've had an MRI but no experience of CT scanning.
Is anyone able to tell me what it's like and what will be required of ds; how long might he have to sit still for; will he have to be on his own etc?
TIA

A CT scan is a sort of xray that produces pictures that are like slices through your body.

The scan itself will probably take less than a minute. He'll lie on a bed that moves in and out (hard, narrow), then the radiographers will use some lights to line things up, go out, then the bed will move him through the scanner which has a large round hole in the middle, but the scanner is less than 30 cm wide. Not claustrophobic at all.

If he really can't bear to be on his own, then you could be with him, but is so fast that most children are happy for a parent just to watch them through the window

dd has had several CT scans. An arm one will be pretty fast (probably quicker than x-ray), and you can usually stay in the room.

Nothing to concern him then, it sounds as though he'll probably find the whole experience pretty cool
Thanks for your reply.
