Can teething really be this bad?

My 14 month old dd has been having a terribly time (especially nights) for the last few days, but the thing that bothers me the most is she seems to have completely lost her appetite. I keep trying to offer soft foods likes apple puree and yoghurt but after the first mouthful she cries out as though her mouth hurts and she won't take any more. Is this normal teething behaviour? To be honest, I never really believed that teething caused serious pain like this, but now I seem to be getting my come-uppance. Today all she ate was a bit of weetabix, she chewed on a croissant at lunchtime and then had some orange juice, milk and a piece of fruit bread in the afternoon. That's it. And it's been like this for last 2/3 days. Weirdly, she seems to be happier chewing on a croissant, than being spoon fed anything.
And last night, she was awake crying almost every two hours. Can teething really be this bad? And does it really destroy appetites like this, or shld I take her to the doctor?

Yes it can be - and worse! We had nights of DS being awake screaming for HOURS with teething. Also had a GP tell me that teething doesn't cause temperatures (and therefore didn't cause his febrile convulsions) - what a load of tosh. What she meant was - teething in her children didn't cause temps. He's been a completely different child since all his teeth came through (over a year ago now) just because he's eating and sleeping normally... So yes, sorry to say teething can be that bad.

yes it does get that bad. my ds never ate for 8 days whilst teething but hes back on form now. i was worried he had some sort of food phobia. sometimes even the calpol doesnt work. you just have to help them best you can and ride the storm

18 month old DD teething now. Runny nose, hardly eating, sleeping loads. Hey ho. Nearly all through (I hope!)

'Tis weird what it does to them!

Thanks people, I feel reassured. Poor you, Weegle, sounds like you had a time of it. And thanks addicted for food info. I shld prob just relax and let her eat what and when she wants...At least your DD sleeps lots, busybutterfly. Mine sleeps for about an hour at a time and then wakes screaming and chewing her pillow and I have to heave myself out of bed to distract her from pain for a moment or two before I can resettle her. HAs anyone tried anbesol (doesn't that sound like its for piles or orajel? REad about these two things on MN

Yeees, I have to say, the sleeping lots makes it bearable (for me)
