My 9 mo DD just fell out of bed am panicking

I put her down on my bed and turned around for a second to pick up a pair of pants and she just crawled v. fast across bed to get to DP who was sitting by the other side and just nevr stopped! She fell straight on her forehead, legs in the air and sort of flipped over. Huge bump on the forehead. Cried for a minute then was fine and DP just took her out for a walk.
Called the doctor, told me just to oberve her, but am having visions of brain hemmorhages etc., you know the scary stories when someone hits their head, they're fine for an hour and then lose consciousness. Oh God. Am feeling so guilty.
Would you take her to A&E just in case? She hit the wooden floor.

I would do as the doctor says but if your still worried then why not call NHS direct for a second opinion? If you're still concerned after that then theres no harm in taking a child to A & E even if its just to set your mind at rest.
Try not to worry too much but do keep an eye on her and keep checking on her if she falls asleep.

Don't stress too much ds (1 tomorrow) fell out of his cot this morning. I think he stood on his pillow and leaned over, all i heard was the thud at 6:30am and then the scream which then woke everyone up. He is fine, i didn't even ring the gp.

CarmenSanDiego · 27/11/2009 09:57

Please don't worry too much, winny. This or something similar happens to most of us at some point. My ds fell off the bed at about 6 months (humungous, high bed) and it was awful. One of my dd's fell off the sofa as a baby onto a hard floor years ago - you'd think I'd have learned my lesson. It's awful and sickening, but it's almost always ok and they get over it. In neither case, the doctor was too worried but they gave the baby a good check over.

In my case, I took the baby to the doctor both times, but not to A&E. If you've called the doctor, that should be reassuring. One thing I was told by a doctor is that if they fall from less than their own height, they're generally ok if they didn't fall too awkwardly (although ds fell further than that, but fortunately onto carpeted floor).

Don't beat yourself up.

Don't worry, it has happened to us all at some point. In fact, I predict an onslought of MNetters rushing on to this thread to tell you about when their DCs have fallen on their heads.

My paediatrician said the same as Carmen's: Generally if the fall is less than their own height then they are ok.

Keep an eye on her. If she seems different than normal, more sleepy or if she vomits then take her to the doc.

If it would calm your fears, then pop along to your GP and ask him to have a quick look. Most GPs are good about doing that.

winny, please don't worry too much. Skulls are hard things. It's why we have 'em. I think 99% of parents have this at some point with falling off something. I still have a tummy-turning over feeling when I think of DS falling backward off his little car thing and banging his head on the patio. These things do burn our souls but I'm sure your DD will be fine. What I would say though is don't spend time agonising about it. If you keep agonising, just get along to the doctors so they can reassure you.

MmeLindt · 27/11/2009 10:40

How is she doing, Winny?

monkeyfacegrace · 27/11/2009 10:53

As others have said, relax! My two both fell off the bed as babies, it happens as they are so quick! My dautghter had a lump the size of an egg literally ballooning out the back of her head, but they survive somehow . I was like you the first time, v.v.v.v.v guilty for ages, but babies bounce, honest! Dont beat yourself up, it wasnt your fault!

winnybella · 27/11/2009 10:58

Thank you so much for your replies. She just came back from her walk and is crawling on the floor looking for more trouble to get into! Pink, medium sized bump in the middle of the forehead, but perky otherwise.
It just really was an awful fall, she fell straight on her forehead with a horrible thump and her feet went over backwards iyswim, not like when they just topple over when sitting etc.
I'll keep on watching her.If she's fine for next couple of hours, than I guess I can relax a bit?

Good to hear that she is ok.

Do you have Arnica cream? It is good for bumps on heads. You can buy it in most pharmacies.

CirrhosisByTheSea · 27/11/2009 11:06

I would say so.

But if you still find yourself worrying this afternoon (after her nap if she has one?) then get along to the afternoon surgery! Always better to be re-assured than to spend days thinking about it.....

Rolled my DD out of moses basket at 3 weeks when the bloody handle broke whilst carrying; cried buckets, baby fine
