Toenails

Thanks for stopping by, not that attractive a thread title. My 18 mth old ds has always had strange toenails; they grow very slowly and seem to curve steeply so dig into his toes (too thin to damage his toes, but look a bit sore when cut, after short wrestle with him). His big toesnails are really short at the sides; hard to explain but as if they are crescent shaped so have these tiny corners. I am worried they are ingrowing (I haven't cut them btw). He doesn't like me doing anything to them, but appears more ticklish than sore. Any thoughts? Should I bother disdainful GP?

My two DS's have similar issues to you. I did ask the GP re the first DS but he wasn't worried and said it was too early to tell if they were ingrown. He said just to keep them short and clean. It's really hard to get them cut but if I don't them they look like they are growing into his toe and as he has got older (now 3.5) they are getting thicker so best to get into the habit. Try when asleep, esp in the pushchair as it's a good position not to disturb the sleep.

Don't cut too short though and you should always cut straight across and not round. Can't remember why!

Mind you, if they look really sore he might need some medical attention. Maybe try the health visitor - they have a drop in session here you could go too without appointment.

Thanks Mamster, we have a similiar Hv clinic I could go to. Will remember cutting rules and try to do frequently! x

ds1 has very odd toenails, a bit like you describe.

don't google, it brings up all sorts of illnesses that will make you panic.

our gp had a look and said it looked like trauma but it's 2 years later and they're still dodgy so i'm not convinced but they don't seem to hurt him and it hasn't escelated into anything worse, i think he just has awful toenails

he practically has no nails at all on his little toes and they're all really thin and concave

Its weird isn't it? Distinguishing perhaps we'll call it ? My DS' have been like it since he was born so I guess they won't change now. Btw, I have practically no little toe nails and it didn't do me any harm (you'll have to take my word for that). Ds' seem fine, best of the lot actually. Fascinating I know!

Both my DC have curly toe nails. Mind you, they both have curly ears too!
