DS is 6. He has chicken pox like spots on his torso and mouth ulcers. no pain or itching or fever. he also had this 6 weeks ago and the GP said it was chicken pox returning. he had terrible chicken pox in July. but instead of scabbing over the spots are fading. the GP is stumped. school keep sending him home! help!

I would have suggested something like scabies except he's not itchy. Impetigo?

MrsJohnDeere · 24/11/2009 14:26

Penicillin reaction? Has he had any anti-biotics?

Ds2 had a penicillin reaction that looked like chicken pox, except it didn't spread or develop as that would.

hand foot and mouth? son had this and the syptoms were similar

IrritatedMe · 24/11/2009 14:28

Another vote for hand foot and mouth. Unusual on torso though I think...?

mrmump · 24/11/2009 14:30

he had hand foot and mouth in April. These blisters are larger.

Just googled hand foot & mouth and it sounds like the symptoms your DS has

IrritatedMe · 24/11/2009 14:34

impetigo?

mrmump · 24/11/2009 14:34

but twice in 6 weeks? i worried that it might be flea bites of worse still bed bug bites.

Molluscum? The spots can look very much like CP, but with no fever or illness, and no blistering. They usually come to a head over a period of months, but not always. Some of the pox on ds2 seem to be fading and flattening, whereas others are becoming more pronounced. On average molluscum usually takes a year or more to pass, but nobody can say that your ds is average! It can also come in waves, with a few spots that don't change much over time, but others that crop up and then vanish.

EldonAve · 24/11/2009 14:35

GP should be referring you on if he can't help

IrritatedMe · 24/11/2009 14:35

Oooh, yes, moluscum. Not sure about in the mouth though, perhaps the oral lesions are just a coincidence, mouth ulcers caused by being run down?

mrmump · 24/11/2009 14:37

gp has said that the next step will be blood tests if he gets it again. tell me more about molluscum.

Oh, how did I manage to forget!?

Ds1 had rash on his bum that was variously described by various GPs as nappy rash ( he was out of nappies and the back of his nightnappy never got wet), chicken pox (he'd had that) or shingles (at 3?). We were given Acyclovir cream that had no effect. Eventually lovely HV saw it and suggested we try Savlon antispetic. Less than a week later, his bum was peachy smooth and lovely again.

Now I try Savlon on most skin problems before doing anything else!

What the NHS has to say about Molluscum. Be cautious about Googling images - most of what you see will be fairly severe cases, and rather more genitals than you probably want to view.

What much of the stuff you will find online does not show, though, is that there can be a wide range of degrees of severity and of persistence of the pox.

Has he been swabbed for skin infection?

alypaly · 25/11/2009 10:17

has he had any anti biotics recently

edinburger · 25/11/2009 10:36

I would agree that is sounds like molluscum. DS has had it for almost three years now! It started on his torso and has spread to his limbs. Out GP confirmed it was molloscum at the time when the first spots appeared and said there was no treatment.

alypaly · 25/11/2009 10:41

i worked in dermatology for years and my dermatology book says to prick some of them and set of a chain reaction. (have a look on molluscum thread) it really works, got rid of over 100 on my sons body. They dont normally occur in the mouth though.
