Molluscum

3yo ds2 has had molluscum for about a year. The first, largest spots are on his torso, but fortunately all the rest are on his bum. Lots of tiny ones, many deep between his bumcheeks.

Ds1 had it for about 18m-2y, and in the months before it finally cleared up some of the spots became quite large and itchy. Not infected.

What can I do to help ds2 when he gets to this stage? I'm a little worried because of the position of most of the spots, and the potential for infection if he scratches.

alypaly - don't have any photos, and am rubbish with technology. BTW - how did you get your ds1 to allow you to prick them? DD completely fell apart at the prospect....acted as if I was proposing an amputation or something.

Ratherbeinthepiste - thanks for the tutorial!

my dd had them on her face - up near her eyebrow line. She also had them in the crook of her arm and on her torso. My dd didnt let me near hers but I did sometimes 'acccidently' rub them a bit hard with a towel when she came out the bath - they go soft in the bath and it is easier to get the insides out though it does hurt a bit still.

seona - apart from the rubbing, did they eventually go on their own? How long were they there?

Seona1973 · 31/01/2010 08:54

a couple went on their own but the rest were removed by the surgeon when she went for an eye operation (thank you surgeon!!). They also removed a few from her arm. The rest went away shortly after that. She had them a fair few months before the op.

Why not take her to the gp and see if it is molluscum and whether they can suggest anything to help.

Has anyone who suggests pricking them actually had Molluscum? I suffered with thema s an adult (I have severe eczema and you are more suceptible to them if you do suffer from it) I found them to be excruciatingly painful, I wouldn't let anyone near them and I have quite a high pain threshold!

Haven't got my hands on any iodine yet. I daren't tell the pharmacist what I want it for either. I like the idea of bribes. The power of the chocolate button!

DD panicked at the idea of having them pricked, and insisted on doing them herself. No idea if she got 'the job' done. There was no way she was going to allow them to be squeezed, so don't no if it was 'mission accomplished' or not.

She now has 4 angry looking red scabby places. Hopefully they'll heal soon, and that will be the end of it.

Hi,
Sorry to hijack but are molluscum similar to skin tags? My dd has a lot of skin tags on her bum, have spoken to gp about them but he thinks we will have to wait till she's a bit older and maybe get them treated under general anesthetic. She's nearly 5 and not aware of them now, but has had them for a long time (as in years). I thought they would eventually disappear but they haven't

Early bird......just caught up with the thread.... I just told DS1 i was going to stab him with the cocktail stick and he was so keen on getting rid of them...he trusted me....foool.
He was glad he did cos they went very quickly. It was funny listening to the screaming, hope the neighbours didnt hear.
He was very brave ,but it was all in a good cause and i had faith in my old dermatology books. It seems to have worked for most people who i have told the method too, as well which is nice as they get teased so much at school.

Earlybird · 03/02/2010 02:37

alypaly - you have a very brave son!

I think the red spots on dd's little face bother me much more than they bother her. One of them looks bigger than ever today....

DottyDot · 02/11/2010 14:49

Hi there - can I ressurect this thread to ask a question - our ds2 (6) has some molluscum - most are the usual look and size but one is HUGE - very lumpy and bobbly and has black bits on it but isn't all black. It still seems to be growing and looks horrible - he's getting teased at PE time by the other kids and he's very aware of it and doesn't like it. He's had it for probably about 6 - 9 months now and I'm just a bit worried about the main one and how big it's getting - and the black bits.

Or am I being neurotic..?! Grin Do some of them go like this and it's all OK? We took him to the GP a few months ago when they first appeared, just for confirmation of the diagnosis, but the main one wasn't looking as bad as it does now.

Sigh. Do you think it's worth a trip back to the GP?

DBennett · 02/11/2010 16:36

I'd head back.

Take a photo (if you have one) of what it used to look like.

Most likely nothing serious but well worth a check.

tegan · 02/11/2010 16:45

Can i just say both my dd's have had molloscum and it does go in time but can take years.
With dd1 she had it for 2 years and then over night it vanished but dd2 only had it about a year and it decreased over time and then went

DottyDot · 09/11/2010 19:28

thanks - quick update - we took him to the GP and turns out it was infected, so antibiotic cream was prescribed and it fell off on the 3rd day of using! Hurrah - the others are now coming off as well so looks like we're nearly there Smile

Jaquelinehyde · 09/11/2010 20:34

DS1 has them as well. They started on his upper thigh, but he now has a few on his tummy, on the back of his knees and now one that has appeared on his chin. He hates them even though he is just about to turn 5.

I have squeezed one or two before just because they were huge and ready to go but the poor little mite screamed and cried and I can't bring myself to do that to him again.

Would a quick pin prick be better and what are the chances or him letting me do them all, he has about 20 in total?

I'm not in a rush as I wouldn't try this until the begining of the Christmas hols as I wouldn't want him undressing at school if they flare up. Should I start talking to him about it now and prepairing the way or shall I just spring it on him?
