Lump in neck

Hi,

Just wanted to ask if anyone's child has had a lump on their neck. My son who is 5 has one on the side of his neck, it is a bit kidney bean shaped but slightly bigger. It doesn't hurt him. I have taken him to the doctor and she said if it has not gone in 6 weeks to go back. I am hoping it will just go away but I can't help worrying about it as it is already 2 weeks since I went to the docs(and 3 weeks since I noticed it) and it is still there.

Anyone had anything similar?

My son had a massive lump in his neck (Chupa Chup lolly size) which I was v worried about. GP was great - sent him to Sick Kids for a blood test - reassured me that he didn't have any other worrying symptoms - lethargy, night sweats etc (because I know you are maybe thinking lymphoma 0 at least I know I was). Test was fine - lump went down eventually bur took a few weeks.

You know yourself that it is very unlikely to be anything sinister but as a mum , worry is your middle name.

Hope it goes away really soon

xx

my dd also had these lumps but on both sides of her neck, one was larger than the other, i took her to the doctor 3 times and was reassured that it was'nt anything worrying, her glands were swollen. I was told that some children just seem to be like this. She also has very large tonsils and that could be a cause.

Anyway hers were noticeable for over a year and have gone down to a much smaller size although if she has a cold they tend to swell up.

My son has some glands on his neck that are always 'up' and sometimes more than others. Like everyone, I was very worried and the GP sent him for some tests. I quizzed the paediatrician at length about it, and he assured me that everything was normal (bloods came back normal for instance)

His explanation was that young kids get this because they face lots of new infections and their glands work overtime. DS has massive tonsils too (also normal apparently)

Doctors said if they come up and down (ie don't get consistently bigger), if they remain 'mobile' and not 'congested' and if he isn't progressively unwell, then it is highly likely it is just him and his glands: ie normal.

But I would say, it is still important to get it checked out by your own GP and get referred on for testing, just to put your mind at rest, because it is a symptom to keep an eye on.

same here, my DS2 who is 19 months has them, only on one side, they are soft and movable and dont increase in size. I was about to go into panic mode when my memory dug up that my DS1 who is much older also had them on the same side.

I also know another first time mother who is going to the doctors over the same issue.

I try to take in the overall condition of the child, is the child developing noramlly, eating normally, sleeping noramlly, if this is so I tend not to worry so much.

A book that really helped me to take control of my childrens health is this.

book

I cannot say how valuable it has been considering its price.

Thanks for all your replies. I think it is probably just normal especially as his tonsils are gigantic!! I will take him back if it hasn't gone down and get the tests to be on the safe side. I feel better about it now though so thank you very much.
