Any dentists around? ds seems to have an extra tooth...

I think I'll be booking an appointment with my GP but just wondered if anyone had come across extra baby teeth and what is generally done about them? ds is 14 mths and seems to have an extra tooth coming through between the 1st and 2nd incisor on the upper right of his mouth (the second incisor came through late with a gap between the first and second and this is where the new tooth is appearing). What would normally be done about cases like this? Will it need to be removed now or later and will it affect the adult teeth coming through? (His teeth have generally come through early and he already has the first molars and the canines too so it isn't that a canine came thoguh before the incisor)

Hope someone can put my mind at rest...

It isn't uncommon to have supernumerary (extra) teeth. Although I don't have alot of knowledge of them (dental nurse, not dentist)

It could be that it is his usual tooth, but it has been moved for some reason & it's coming through in the wrong place.

However, I would advise that you see a dentist, not a GP about this.

Was wondering about whether to see a dentist but we don't have any nhs ones in my area (I go to one near my parents) and though we might just end up being referred to a paediatric dentist which I guess the gp could do. I will phone my dentist though to ask for advice first.

My friends ds has this. She took him to her GP and he said its perfectly normal and will sort its self out when the adult teeth come through.

Maybe a good idea to get it looked at just to make sure.

GP won't know about teeth tbh. So really, calling/seeing would be a waste of time.

He also probably wouldn't know who was the best to refer you to, so yes, better to call your dentist imo.

Save you some wasted time.

dentist receptionist just said to take him along when I go for my next check up in Jan for the dentist to have a quick look - didn't seem to think it needed looking at particularly quickly - perhaps they don't do anything until they are a bit older.

dd had exactly that - an extra tooth between 1 and 2 at the top. Apparently, it's more common to have it right in the middle. Anyway, he had it pulled out & the dentist said there may be an adult tooth missing there, or normal adult tooth or an extra tooth again. In the event he had an extra adult tooth too & had to have that one removed as well (bit more tricky that as the adult ones have big roots).
