Is no wee since 8am a reason to go to A&E? DD2 is 11 month & is even vomming water. It's her bedtime and she is exhausted. Is it ok to put her to bed or shld she see a doctor?

ring nhs direct

BrokenBananaTantrum · 22/11/2009 18:35

I would phone NHS Direct on 0845 4647 and ask them, because I would be worried about her being dehydrated.

Let us know how she is if you can

Have rung. Cld take two hours for call back and if she has to be seen I wld rather go now than when she is even more tired.

not peeing ia sign she is quite dehydrated

Have you got/can you get diarolyte???

We learned the hard way. Best thing you can do is get a medecine syringe and give your dd 5mls of diarolyte as often as you can.. even if you have to wake her. I know it means no sleep for anyone but better than she ends up hospitalised on a drip (our ds ended up here cos nhs 24 never thought to give us this advice.. we were giving him bottles that he was downing and it was running right through him (sorry tmi)

If you dont have/cant get diarolyte then give her plain water. I think you will find if you keep the doses small 5/10mls it should stay put long enough to help rehydrate her

You will notice if she is dehydrated that her lips may be a bit blue and her skin will be dry

good luck.. hope she gets better soon

Take her otherwise you will be worrying all night. I know it can be a pain in the arse especially of she is very tired but I always think it is better to be safe and save yourself the sleepless night.

agree with frasersmummy - if you can just give her 5mls every 5mins it should help her keep something down.

Dd2 ended up at A&E and this is what they did with her - luckily she kept it down (over the space of an hour) so we went home - if she hadn't she would have been admitted and given fluids by a tube up her nose.

The drip feed approach seemed to help her tummy cope with liquid again and she managed to keep water and milk down thereafter.

If you can get some rehydration stuff to add to teh water that will also help. We could only get it on prescription as dd2 was under 1yo - so go to your out of hours doctor if only to get some.

Hope she's better soon

Thanks all. Dr called back and advised A&E but I am trying the 5ml approach for an hour before I resort to hospital. Fingers crossed.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Hope you got on OK. For future reference if you don't have dioralyte in the house blackcurrant britvic cordial is just as good as it is very sugary (14.4g per 100ml) It is the sugar that makes the water go into the cells quicker and therefore they hydrate quicker.

Thanks all. We ended up in hospital for 24hrs but she is on the mend now. Thankfully I am still BFing and although we were down to one feed a day I let her have it as much as she wanted and the doctors said breast milk is very easily absorbed so brilliant for rehydrating. So glad to be home!
