DS has not pooed for 3 days

He is saying that his bottom hurts and he can't go. Have been to the loo with him loads of times this morning but nothing happening. He sat for 30 mins with a book (with encouragement) rocking, blowing bubbles all to try and move the right muscles but nothing happened. He is still eating though

OOH doctor has just phoned back and suggested Lactulose which I will get. Is it worth me buying some Glycerine suppositories though? I have no problem with giving those if they will help at the moment (but would rather not have to obviously).

Anything else worth trying? He tends to do large poos anyway - would Movicol be better as a long term treatment?

I have had this problem with DD. 3 days is not too much to worry about and I would not overreact unless it becomes a recurring problem. Start with lactulose and increase the amount of water he drinks. Its best to get this working naturally rather than using laxatives which are irritants because they can end up dependent on them. Patience is everything. Good luck.

Thanks GandC - will up the water intake then. . Thankfully DS is pretty good about water and fruit and veg etc.

Okra soup (Okra also known as ladyfingers - a handful- + 1 potato + bisto garnules)
Boil, blend and add double cream.

Many alternative health practitioners believe the okra fiber, absorbing water and ensuring bulk in stools, helps prevent and improve constipation. Fiber in general is helpful for this but okra is one of the best, along with ground flax seed and psyllium. Unlike harsh wheat bran, which can irritate or injure the intestinal tract, okra's mucilage soothes, and okra facilitates elimination more comfortably by its slippery characteristic many people abhor.
Further contributing to the health of the intestinal tract, okra fiber (as well as flax and psyllium) has no equal among fibers for feeding the good bacteria (probiotics).

I made an okra stew one night. My husband loved it and woke up in the middle of the night to rush to the toilet. His comment was: "what did I do? are you trying to kill me?"

Thank you slim - haven't tried okra ever as a food so will get some and try this out.DS dfoesn't like soup (but I do and that sounds really nice) but DS loves vegetables and is always up for trying different and new veggies too (nope I am not a good mother - just a lucky one - did nothing special to make him like this).

OK then try this:

  1. slice quite thin, lightly dust with seasoned flour and fry until crispy. (make tiny little crisps)

  2. slice and make a stew in tomato sauce and serve with rice.

honestly, works wonders. Forget about prune juice!

If he hates it, try prunes Steep in boiling water overnight, blend and mix the compote with natural or vanilla yogurt.
