My best friend from school has scoliosis, so does my DH. Friend from school had it very severely and needed a lot of surgery while we were at primary school and wore a body brace. She is fine now and is a physiotherapist.

DH has never needed any intervention. Has twinges/aches when he does too much but is an amateur triathlete so clearly doesn't hold him back.

What have you been told?

unfitmother · 21/11/2009 12:13

Yes, my sister has it.
It's great it's been diagnosed so young, what treatment have they proposed. My sister had to wear a brace when she was young which straightened out her spine as she grew.

unfitmother · 21/11/2009 12:14

My sister is a physio too!

ShowOfHands · 21/11/2009 12:17

Well, there you are. You wanted info on scoliosis and in the process you've discovered that your ds is very likely to become a physio!

PersonalClown · 21/11/2009 12:22

I was diagnosed a couple of months ago.
While mine is visible and quite noticeable, it's not stopping me from anything.

I'm coming to the end of a 6 week back stabilisation class to help train my core muscles and I've been told that swimming is one of the best excerises to keep those mucles trained.

frakkinaround · 21/11/2009 12:26

I have it, but it's not too bad, and I was an amateur competitive gymnast until my teens. My brother also has it but his is a lot more pronounced than mine (but he was lazier about doing the excercises etc).

If you follow the advice/treatment plan then it'll be fine. Is it serious?

gothicmama · 21/11/2009 20:40

thanks for your replies - not sure about treatment plan yet it was diagnoised Friday and we are awaiting another appointment after they have looked at xrays to determine treatment, physio was mention, guess I was looking for positives and you have given me those as someone said I now know he is likely to become a physio and I will need to nag encourage him to do any exercises

had it all my life and play badminton to a high level. It all depends on how bad it is really as there are varying degrees.

I have scoliosis. My left leg is about 1cm shorter than my right as a result. I did wear an insert in my shoe when I was a teenager but haven't bothered since. My shoulders aren't the same height but my body has just adapted to it. It really hasn't caused me any problems - I'm not the world's most sporty person (largely because I have rubbish hand/eye/ball co-ordination) but I used to be a pretty good long distance runner, I'm a very good skier and a pretty good dancer (so I'm told). It really varies according to the severity of it - for the vast majority of people it doesn't cause major issues. HTH

no personal experience. but my BF's DD has scoliosis and Thoracic Insufficiency Syndrome Associated. It was picked up during her pg. Most of her problems would have been caused by the TIS, but that was causing her back to be literally shaped like an S. (I have never seen anything like her first x-ray she had done before her first op)

Because of the TIS she's had to have surgery every 6 months since she was 2yrs old where they've inserted a bar to make sure she keeps her full lung capacity. You can see (well I can as I know her well) when she's been growing and is due another bar lengthening or replacement as her shoulders on the side where the bar is "drops" as the other side grows.

However, it hasn't stopped her AT ALL. She's incredibly active, does dancing, swings upside down on the monkey bars and in general has no problems at all.

I have scoliosis too! Not very severe - I was monitored every few months from about 8, when they diagnosed me. If you have a steep growth spurt as a child, it can require a brace. I didn't really grow much though!

At 36, I'm aware that my spine is very slightly wiggly and that one of my shoulders is higher than the other. You can't tell though, unless I'm unclothed and in front of a doctor! The only thing I found I couldn't really do was roller skate or ice skate, as the slight difference in leg length seemed to show up there.
