ds1 has asthma and is always getting chest infections, colds, croup etc. We have a purifier thingy which is good for the germs but what is the best one to get for his room to help night time coughs and colds? I dont want one that will make the room hot and sweaty as he gets hot in the night as it is.

I have one similar to this from John Lewis which works well. It doesn't get hot - it's a cool mist. I use it like you - when one of my sons gets a cough or is having an asthma episode.

I think any cool mist one would work - look for the most reliable. I do think it helps, however my perception could be subject to the placebo effect! The dry central heating doesn't seem to do them any favours though, so it probably does do some good. Sorry for wishy washy answer.

I like the Vicks better but that's only because I like gadget-y things.

mad4myboys - can I ask what do you find best for croup - my DS (7) has started getting it the last year, so I dread him getting a cough now in case it happens again. The last 2 times we were at the hospital and he had to have steroids - christmas eve too

mad4myboys · 19/11/2009 20:20

poor you, know how you feel. Well tbh not a great deal. Generally leave the window open as fresh air seemed to help at night. Also i ended up sleeping on the sofa with him sitting/lying up on me if that makes sense?

Its the worse thing going as you cant medicate it. sorry that doesnt really help. Buying one of these in hope that it helps!

Thanks. Good luck, hope it helps. I bought a cold air humidifier - when my DS first started with croup - to be honest, it didn't help

This is going to sound weird, but it's what we were advised to do and it worked when my eldest was a baby with croup:

1 - keep him in a steamy bathroom (run the shower as hot as possible) for about 10-20 minutes
2 - bundle him up and take him outside in the cold night air

and repeat as necessary.

I ended up sleeping on the floor of his room when he had it. Good luck for this year, Single and mad.

when we did the bathroom thing it sent the smoke detectors off! Too much steam! Not great in middle of night!
