son excessively drowsy with chicken pox

My 3 year old son is really poorly with chicken pox. He keeps screaming in pain about spots itching around his groin area and has just fallen asleep on the sofa before lunch. Is this normal? Everything I have read has suggested the symptoms apart from the spots are generally mild.

My dd was like this as well. Her temp was sky high for a good three days and she was very sleepy at times. She was totally floored by the virus, and absolutely covered in spots.

I expected it to be mild as well, it took me completely by surprise. Was around ten days before she was fully recovered.

My DD was like this. Have you tried piriton - it helps relieve the spots a bit. Also bicarb in a warm bath.

Thanks, I was panicking that he was having complications and would need to go to hospital. A lot of his friends have just had this but didn't seem to be poorly apart from the itching. I have tried bicarb but not piriton will send DH out on way home from work - thanks x

I did too - I took dd to A&E thinking she was developing complications. The dr was so sweet, he was like, "Look at the poor child, don't you think you'd be feeling a bit shit if it was you?"

Hope he's better soon. No doubt everyone will be telling you it'd much better to get it young, and at least it's over and done with.

Ds has chicken pox, last week he was very poorly but at the time he didn't have any spots so we thought he had the flu. I think it is quite normal to be unwell for the first few days.

mum2ozzie · 18/11/2009 12:52

Yes I was quite pleased when the spots started appearing on Monday night. Not any more though. I had no idea it was going to be this bad.

I am also dreading going through this again in two weeks time with my one year old, currently teething and already up 3 - 4 times every night.

I think the symptoms come and go. Ds has been poorly this afternoon and very sleepy. I'm worried about him now.

mum2ozzie · 18/11/2009 21:47

my son has also continued to be really poorly this afternoon and has just been up now with the terrible itching. The spots are just everywhere. I had no idea chicken pox was so terrible.

when my twins had it DT1 got it first, yuo'd hardly know she had it, but DT2 ended up on ABs she was so floored by it, take him to gp tomorrow poor thing

naughtyameliajayne · 18/11/2009 21:55

if you are at all worried go to A&E - my 3 had it last year, DS2 ended up in hospital, temp of 41, was awful. i knew in my heart of hearts i wasnt happy about him, he wasnt right etc etc - took him to the GPs who said get him straight to hosp - he was hallucinating and all kinds!! Ds1 had it, and was a bit poorly and itchy but was fine, DS2 and 3 were terrible with it. some seem to get hit worse than others but i would say if you are at all worried take them to hospital

How is he today mum2ozzie?

I had a terrible night with ds. Up all night with him. Its awful to see them so in much pain.

Pinkjenny · 19/11/2009 11:27

Sending you both 'get well' vibes. Mr Tumble gives me the heebies now because it reminds me of when dd had cp. I think it just takes you by surprise because you're expecting it to be mild.

How is your ds today, thedollshouse?

thedollshouse · 19/11/2009 17:01

He is much brighter this afternoon, thanks Pinkjenny, I was very worried about him this morning as he didn't even have the energy to lift his head from the pillow but he has been chatting away the last couple of hours!
