DD been off colour all weekend.
Eaten little in the last 36 hours.
Fever started last night - 38.8 when she had a does of Calpol. More calpol at 6.30 and 10.30 when her temp was 39.6. Over the past hour and a half it has dropped, alebit very slowly, is now 38.4.
When can i give Calprofen - containing ibuprofen?

I think you can give ibuprofen based stuff 2 hrs after paracetomol based stuff? Tbh, if the temp is dropping of its own accord and dd isn't too uncomfortable, I wouldn't give anything for 38.4.
(our doc always says a fever is actually a good thing- that the body is doing its job and fighting off the lurgy and not to give anything unless it's over 38.5 for more than 12 hrs)
Hope dd is feeling better soon!

I think I would wait 4 hours. That's the usual gap that's recommended.

the instructions should be on the bottle if it is in the original.

Ibuprofen should only be given 3 times a day maximum. It should also be given with or after food as it can cause stomach problems.

giving it at 6.30 and 10.30pm is not a big enough gap.

If you need pain relief this frequently, alternate it with plain paracetamol syrup which can be given 4 times a day.

So paracetmol 6hourly (4 times a day evenly spaced out) and ibuprofen 8hourly(with or straight after food)

Dont overdose ibuprofen as its strips the gut.

You can give calpol (paracetamol) and ibuprofen at the same time as long as each dose of the same medicine is 4 hours apart - I tend to give ibuprofen 2 hours after paracetamol so that just before the 4 hours when one wears off and the next dose is due there is an "overlap".

If you need clarification NHS Direct or a pharmacist (phone one if you can't get out) will be able to advise. Probably safer than taking the advice of people on the internet too!

BertieBotts · 17/11/2009 10:20

NHS Direct number is 0845 4647 by the way.

Tobermory · 17/11/2009 10:23

Bertie, I know you're probably right re sources if advice...... But don't don't MNers know everything?!!
thanks all for advice, in the end I stuck with calpol
and cbeebies and this morning back to a pretty normal temp. Hurray!

You can give both at the same time but the general GP advice is to intercollate, 2 hours apart, so that one of them is always working at maximum capacity as the other wears off. Obviously the critical thing is not to give too many doses of either in a day. My dd (22 mo) has something similar...very high fever and a cold...sadly, I seem to have picked it up too but can't take the 'profen (due to bump!)

Tobermory · 17/11/2009 10:47

Filly, Im in a similar situation.
Well no obvious bump yet, just getting wider round the waist! Hoping my ahces n pains go soon, being ill and lookign after a poorly little one is bloomin hard work!

tobermory - I shouldnt have a bump yet (only 10 weeks!) but it seems to be determined to make an appearance...hope you feel better soon

I know and I have asked for medical advice here too It's just everyone's answers were so different, I thought it was best to check!
