DD 4.9 has always had a poor appetite and been underweight, this week however she has been constantly hungry and wanting food all the time, i have been happy about this and thought she must be having a growth spurt at last. However her teacher pulled me up on the way home today and said she was concerned as children dont usually change their appetite this quick and if she was still like this next week to take her to the gp. She said she has been crying at school for food and has been thirsty all the time to. Is this something i should be concerned about?

Also for the last week dd ahs woke up every single night with nightmares, she does suffer from these but usually about once a week not every night

The increased thirst is a clssical symptom of diabetes as are increased appetite and sleep disturbances.

If you were to walk into my pharmacy tomorrow morning I would be referring you straight away to NHS 24. Therfore I can only recommend you contact NHS 24 in the morning and not wait until monday to see your dd's gp.

Cross why thanks for you response. I knew about the increased thirst as i have just been diagnosed with gestational diabetes, however i have not noticed the increase in thirst, just her teacher has noticed that, i have only noticed the increase in hunger and the sleep.

I am testing my blood sugars at the minute do you think i should test dd?

I've been type 1 since i was a kid..some of your DD's symptoms were like i had but i was also very very tired...yes give her a finger prick test

mummytopebs · 14/11/2009 21:46

I have noticed her being more thirsty today so will take her to the gp on monday.

Paddyclamp when do you think the best time to do a finger prick would be? And should the readings be similar to mine?

Hi still the same absolutly starving and thirsty and waking up with nightmares. I did her blood sugar this morning and it was 5.4 after breakfast so in the normal range they have given me so not sure if it could be diabetes. Will take her to the doctors tomorrow. Anyone any other ideas what this could be, feel a bit silly taking her to the doctors because she is starving

These are the same symptoms that my ds presented with when he developed t1 diabetes two years ago. Glad you're following it up as something isn't right. All the best, don't give up until you're happy it's resolved.

Did you do her blood sugar as soon as she'd eaten? Just wondering if having fasted overnight that the breakfast carbs hadn't had time to 'kick in'.
If it is diabetes starting to present she could still be in 'honeymoon', where the pancreas still works a bit and you get inconsistent blood sugars.

Let us know how you get on. Will keep fingers crossed for you.

Check her bum for threadworm.

paddyclamp · 15/11/2009 22:53

If she's 5.4 after food it doesn't sound like she has diabetes.....my blood sugar was 45 mmol/l at diagnosis!!

Test her again first thing in the morning before any food and if her levels are raised then ie are more than about 7 i would take her straight to the doc....another good time to test would be 2 hours after food, again this time her BG shouldn't be raised

How long has this been goin on? Reason i ask is i know i got v ill v quickly

mummytopebs · 16/11/2009 11:48

Hi it has been going on about a week

I took her to the gp this morning who tested her urine and said there was no sugar in it and was not concerned. He talked to me like i was stupid for taking her in for being starving. I dont think there is anything else i can do really so will just keep a close eye on her.

I have considered worms but have checked her poo and cant see anything, so hopefully is just a growth spurt.
