my 7 year old has been prescribed a strong fluoride toothpaste - but it says not for under 16s on the label

DS2 has thin enamel on his teeth. He has had some fluoride varnish painted on his front teeth but now his back molars are coming through the dentist has prescribed Duraphat 5000ppm. Not only am I worried about the fact that it says 'not for under 16s' on the label, I'm also anxious as Ds2 is autistic and swallows rather than spitting out the toothpaste. The dentist knows this - he goes to an SN clinic - and I am going to ring to check on Monday, but in the mean time I wondered whether there were any dentists on here who could reassure me (or otherwise).

well I am completely dentally unqualified - but in my area the Surestart NHS workers encourage us to use bogstandard colgate even with under 5s, as our water isn't fluoridated, so I wonder if similar might apply in your area.

If it's been prescribed then it will be fine. Paracetamol isn't licensed for under 12mth olds but Drs prescibe it all the time for after immunisations etc.
