my ds2 is just turning 1 and has alot of health issues including severe reflux that isnt improving with age but not getting worse. Anyway from the day he was born he was VERY stuffy/nasaly. It was put down to 'newborn mucous' for first month or so. Anyway he very quickly developed sleep apnea (ds1 and dh the same) and he had a vague sleep study done when he was small whilst in hospital for reflux tests but they never had to give oxygen etc so it was just dismisses 'he'l grow out of it'. It never changed so back to paeds who said it was the reflux. I agree that reflux can cause these sort of issues.

However since his last stay in hosp nearly 8 weeks ago he has got paricularly bad. His nose is always full of crusty bogeys (sorry!) and every day since he was born we have had to use olbas oil/vapourisers, saline drops etc at night. He sleeps propped up for reflux. Alot of the time even when he is awake he sounds funny when he is breathing. It comes and goes. Sort of like a cat purring? Also has a cough (always has) chest is ALWAYS clear. Everyone thinks he has a constant cold. IT is now interferring in his sleeping (when the reflux already does interfer) and wakes so frequent either from reflux or as his nose is so blocked and he cant breath and it makes a funny noise at the back of his nose. Hard to explain.

When he saw an ENT specialist when he was about 7 months he said he thinks he had a degree of floppy larynx that he was growing out of. That his tonsils seemed ok blah blah. Anyway both ds's have just had another sleep study done to see if that brings anything up.

Really confused. Ive googled floppy larynx and watched videos of their breathing but dont think that is him..

From a slt perspective, if he still gags a lot on certain textures, perhaps you could request a referral to slt for a feeding assessment. This would need to be done via your gp or paeds consultant.

Has he been discharged from ENT or will he be reviewed? I would be hoping for a reveiew as his problems with the sugestedfloppy larynx are not going away. Did ent say when they thought this should improve if this is the case i.e. that he actually is growing out of the problem?

mad4myboys · 15/11/2009 18:49

they said it was 'mild' and would grow out of it. He hasnt been discharged from them, waiting for results of latest sleep study. Will be chasing results tomorrow and depending on what is said i guess will determine what happens next?

Is the sleep study to see if he has episodes of apnea?

mad4myboys · 15/11/2009 20:33

i guess so? Sats levels, heart rate etc

my dc has a floppy layrinx/windpipe too he had it from day one hes 3 now and still got it ive just to watch him for chest infections etc

mad4myboys · 17/11/2009 16:54

really? I took video in for gp to see and she said yes its still floppy larynx... guess we will wait for him to grow out of it? Not sure what all his other problems are on top of it though!

how long do they let it go on for?

it do4esn't sound like my experience of laryngomalacia with ds1 to be honest

he had frequent periods when he sounded like he literally couldn't breathe, he could, but the windpipe was closing in on itself making it sound awful
he had tests and his oxygen levels were ok so it was left.

but he didn't have constant snotty nose or bogeys or anything like that, also when he breathed his chest woudl all cave in where he was making extra effort to get the air in.
also no coughing or anything like that

he started to improve around 8-9 months iirc and from 2 has been pretty much fine although he still snores and his breathing is laboured a bit if he has a cold or anything

thisisyesterday · 17/11/2009 20:50

also no probs with swallowing, he weaend fine and has always been ok, despite the 6 month mark being the worst for him in terms of his breathing probs

mad4myboys · 17/11/2009 20:56

hmmmmm
