Blood in stool

My 4 yr old daughter has in the past had streaks of blood on her stools, and also on the tissue. It doesn't happen for a while and all of a sudden it happens again. She has had spells of this as long as I can remember, but i stress it is very occasional. Her diet is very good (plenty of fresh fruit and veg). Tonight she had another large bright red streak again (first time I have seen this in a long while). I do try and check her after she has passed a stool, but she's at nursery and I obviously can't check her stools there. She is often quite flatulent. I have told our GP about this in the past and they say if it continues then it should be investigated. I shall call them tomorrow. Has anyone had any experience of this and what could be causing it?

Could be a lot of things, most likely an anal fissure. Kids do get constipated, it's not just about food - does she drink enough? Some kids do get constipated even with a good diet. Exercise can help and stool softeners. Or it could be something like collitis, but don't Google, go see the GP.

Thanks wmmc for your very prompt reply. She does drink water (we try and encourage her to anyway!) sometimes she will hardly touch it and other times she will drink lots. The last couple of days she has opted more for milk and smoothies - don't know if this has anything do with it. I shall contact GP tomorrow. Thanks again.

Interesting. Does it happen more when she has a lot of dairy? I wonder if she could have a lactose intolerance?

It is possible - she does eat a lot of dairy (mostly she loves cheese!) although she hasn't had any more of that the last couple of days. She was breast fed as a baby and there were some spells of this then, and I do remember health visitor suggesting I try cut back on dairy which I did try but the streaking was occasional so couldn't track it down. As an infant her bowel movements were what i would describe as typical brestfed stools - very runny and even at that her little face would look like she was straining. The GP's didn't seem too concerned at the time (and I was quite persistent!)although they did say to have it investigated if it does continue. It is every now and then this happens. I will take her back to GP.
