fall off changing station

Hi there

My son, 17 weeks old, fell off his changing station onto the floor (carpeted) this evening.

He obviously screamed and was a bit shaken but then seemed okay. He is now in bed asleep at his usual time.

I turned my back for just one second - feel really really guilty!!!

Do you think that I need to take him to A & E?

Thanks
Mandy

Does anyone think maybe changing tables are a really bad idea?! Glad he is Ok Mandy.

I know sometimes it isn't possible for the parent to get to floor level easily but there seem to be so many accidents with them.

Glad he is OK!

Friend of mine's Dc fell off changing station, did not cry one bit. My friend went to A&E "just in case" and her baby had brocken a leg in two different parts!

Since then I always got my Dcs checked after a bad fall (when too litle to be able to explain how hurt they are, not anymore since they can speak)

Glad your baby is ok but I agree with Flight, changing tables are a very bad idea!

I change ds's nappy on a mat on the floor, and have done since he was very small as he is so mobile and wiggly.

FlightAttendant · 08/10/2009 12:49

Hi Belgo did you notice anything? Flounce free FA has been reinstated!

belgo · 08/10/2009 12:49

and I recently met a parent who's small baby had fallen off of a table - the baby was strapped into a bouncy chair which was on the table but the baby and the chair all fell off, and the baby ended up on the floor with the chair on top of him, still attached.

belgo · 08/10/2009 12:50

I did notice the correct spelling of your name Flight!

FlightAttendant · 08/10/2009 12:51

Oh I am glad.

Gosh these tales of falling babies are horrifying.

Mind you there is always something they will fall off I suppose...eventually.

belgo · 08/10/2009 12:58

yes flight especially when they start climbing up there themselves! About a month ago, ds wasn't even 11 months old, I turned around to find him sat on the kitchen table, both arms in a jug of water, bouncing up and down on his legs, big smile on his face....I had to stay calm so that he didn't move before I go to him as it was a three foot fall onto a hard tiled floor. I got him on time but that gave me a fright - he had used the Tripp trapp to climb up there!

And just two weeks ago he climbed onto a toy box and fell off and lost consciousness - resulted in a night in hospital - he got over it fine but I haven't!

FlightAttendant · 09/10/2009 06:57

Oh no!!!

I am glad he is Ok. Fwiw ds2 tumbled down the stairs at about that age. He had a big bump on his head and the nurses at A&E were very cautious but let us go home in the end...then we moved to a flat without stairs, thankfully.

Cant't believe they are getting so big now.

belgo · 09/10/2009 07:31

oh stairs that must have been scary- and that's reminded me - a few weeks ago I had an upset tummy and had to rush to the downstairs loo - and when I came out again, ds and dd2 were both upstairs - ds had either climbed all the way upstairs (22 hard wooden steps) or dd2 had carried him there! She refused to tell me.

I'm counting yet more grey hairs - dd1 was exactly the same climbing everywhere when she was a baby but I only had one baby then and it was easier to watch her!

girlsyearapart · 09/10/2009 07:41

The day after dd1 learnt to roll over she rolled off a bed and bumped her head on bedside table.

She was fine I wasn't!

Last week at a playgroup where they have the change mats in the toilets on a wide windowsill a baby fell off onto the tiled floor.

Quite long way and a hard floor. Cried but seemingly fine again after a few mins

Anyway as from this thread it seems many of us have unwittingly let our baby fall. Obviously not done on purpose.

BUT this lady instead of thinking 'Stupid me never doing that again' COMPLAINED to the playgroup people (church volunteers) that the change mat should've had straps.

Not sure what they said but know what I would've said..

belgo · 09/10/2009 07:44

What a silly woman to complain about the lack of straps. In fact I don't think changing stations should have straps because they are nearly always rubbish and make you feel that your baby is more secure they they really are.

girlsyearapart · 09/10/2009 07:52

I know I was both for the lovely people who organise the group and at the woman.

My two have always been able to get out of the straps anyway.

The bottom line is if the baby managed to fall right off onto the floor the Mum must've taken her eyes off him albeit briefly.

M1SSUNDERSTOOD · 09/10/2009 07:58

I sympathize as this has happened not once but twice to us (not same baby). First time DS1 fell onto carpet and landed on his back, cried right away and I rushed him over to my neighbour who has 7 kids. He seemed fine butkept eye in him and took him to clinic that day. 2nd time was really hear stopping as the carry cot wasn't secured properly to the pram chassis and I had gone to nursery. When i got home and bumped down step the carry cot shot off with DS2 in it. Luckily he landed in the hood and seemed ok.

mandykersh · 09/10/2009 14:34

Hi everyone, sorry for the delay in updating.
In the end I decided to take him to A & E yesterday morning. On reflection and peace of mind I thought it best to get him checked iover desite me being certain that he was ok. I called me GP in the morning but they were full so got DH to drive me to the local A & E.

I had a lot of waiting around as you do at these places, but when we finally got seen by a doctor he checked him out and as thought he is totally perfect, not even a bruise or a bump.
