4mo baby with swollen head/neck

DD2 has not been well for over a week. She's been snuffly, hoarse and grumpy/tired. This morning she has a swollen area at the top of her neck/base of her head on both sides of her head. I'm not sure whether to bother the doctor.

Any ideas?

She's still not right but she is feeding better and doesn't have a temperature today. I find it most bizarre that she has so many areas of swelling. The back of her head is still particularly swollen. She is still very tired but keeps smiling. She is a very happy and relaxed baby so it's a bit of a shock having her so grumpy at times.

With all respect, you have a 4 month old baby with a head/neck/arm swollen and you are not worried it could be something serious? I mean, it's probably not, but I have to say that doesn't really sound like a typical childhood sickness. Fever, upset tummy etc, yes.
But all this swelling? I wish someone more knowledgeable would come here...
All I'm saying is that if this seems to you to be not an "ordinary" sort of thing, then maybe you should consider going to A&E?
Good luck and keep us updated.

i'm glad she is a bit better.

i'm afraid i'd second getting a second opinion, as this does seem rather extraordinary. but i'm a total worrier - was worried about DS yesterday and he just had a runy nose!

thanks for the update and i hope she continues to improve

Glad she has improved a bit.

I think all the areas of swelling are where you find glands and glands do swell when they are fighting off infection.

My gp didn't seem too worried when dd presented at the surgery with such swollen glands in her neck that you could see them bulging and she couldn't move it. Just said keep giving pain killers regularly and, of course, come back if she worsens - which I did when the rash appeared.

I went back last week as dd's glands are still up (2 months on) but nowhere near as much. Saw different gp in the practice and he was still not too concerned - said they can take a while to come down.

Of course, I am not a doctor and my dd is 4 years old

Swaliswan, how's your DD today?

JumeirahJane · 07/09/2009 12:21

I hope that in this case no news is good news, Swali?

Yes let us know please

Swaliswan · 07/09/2009 21:10

Sorry to not have been on. It's been a rough few days with both of us being quite poorly. DD2 seems to have turned a corner today though and is much better. Her head is hardly swollen at all now. She is, however, having a growth spurt It is reassuring that she is displaying normal baby behaviour once again
