DD's never been constipated before so awful to see her in pain and was shocked to see blood in her stools.
Have been giving her lots of fruit but are there any foods she should avoid?

Bananas and eggs spring to mind.

Dried fruit good for getting her going.

Thanks.
What about milk - shall i offer as usual or should I avoid? (That's cow's milk, not breast milk btw)

Erm, think milk is ok.

I would give her diluted fresh orange juice (or perhaps diluted prune juice?).

Fresh apple juice was recommended by our paed consultant - he suggested grating the apple and ringing out the juice!

GP has recently prescribed Lactulose to help DD1 - nearly 3yo. Her constipation got worse around toilet training and she started holding on after some VERY painful (for both of us) experiences that put me in mind of being in labour! Holding made it worse as water was reabsorbed into the body so poo was VERY hard!

Anyway, Lactulose softened the poo enough so it no loger hurts. We only used the stuff for a week or so and now just use it occasionally - DD1 still holds sometimes because he is worried it will hurt but 'poo medicine' means we are coming out the other side.

DD has diluted prune juice with her breakfast, has worked wonders with her constipation (when she's bad it's like pebbles). Blueberries seem to do the trick as well and she loves them; also we make sure she's drinking lots of water during the day, especially now it's (sort of) warmer.

Porridge is good for preventing constipation, and there's an Annabel Karmel recipe for dried fruit puree, with prunes, dried apricots, apples and pears, which is extremely efficient at getting things moving. And spinach.

Definitely avoid bananas. Ds (now 7) still can't have more than 2 a week without all the constipation stuff starting up again.

Rather than lactulose (a softener) our GP prescribed (on paed advice) Senokot, which was fabulous.

Some kids just seem to be more prone then others. Ds was constipated from the first taste of solids. Both dds were totally fine.
