Odd orange stains on dd's sheets. She's 5, what could it be?

BooBooChicken · 22/07/2009 17:20

it's not blood and i am really unsure as to where these marks are coming from. it has happened twice now in as many weeks. she is in good health generally.

i initially thought it might be from her bottom, but her pjs are not stained around the crotch or bum - the stains on the sheets are kind of all over and on the outside of her pjs, top and bottom.

i don't think its any kind of vaginal discharge for the same reason.

i asked her if she had been sick. she said no, and it doesn't smell of sick.

i can't figure which bodily secretion it is!!

all i know is that it will NOT come off her sheets, despite stain treatments and repeated washes. these stains are like those from a curry, just will not budge.

any ideas to this mystery?

palest pink sheets so not bleach stains i don't think

rust - does the bed have springs?

plusonemore · 22/07/2009 20:20

can i suggest a burst ear drum? Although it does sound like there might be too much for that...However, when ds1 had burst ear drum it was pale orangey and a bugger to clean

BooBooChicken · 22/07/2009 20:34

not rusty bedsprings, or pink toothpaste.

would a burst ear drum mean sore ears? daft question i know, but her ears are fine, i looked and asked if they were sore and she said not.

but it sounds like similar stuff..yukky horried stuff!

not necessarily painful, might have happened in the night so she wouldnt have noticed, although may have been some pressure beforehand. When it happened to ds it was a couple of patches each about size of my palm. If it is, the ear drums just heal themselves

nellyup · 22/07/2009 20:43

sun cream - plenty of my dc's clothes have orangey stains from suncream

BooBooChicken · 22/07/2009 20:55

sadly we have had so little sun here there has been no need for cream!

about the eardrums - if they burst, is that it then, or would they keep leaving goo? this has happened twice so one lot of goo per ear?

i think she would have said spmething ear related, or would she have had sticky hair in the morning?

Does it smell of anything?

Has she been on any medication?

BooBooChicken · 22/07/2009 21:08

No smell and no meds either.

this is mystifying me now!

GiraffeAHolic · 22/07/2009 21:13

I'm enthralled

GiraffeAHolic · 22/07/2009 21:14

Are the stains on the front or back of the pjs?

popsycal · 22/07/2009 21:16

felt pen

we had bright orange stains about a year ago and it turned out to be pen

popsycal · 22/07/2009 21:17

does she have a water pistol?
seriously...

BooBooChicken · 22/07/2009 21:19

on the legs and on the top of her pjs. i have sent her to bed tonight with knickers on under her pjs to see where, if anywhere on her person, this is coming from..

no sign of felt pens.. and no water pistol!!

OP posts:
GiraffeAHolic · 22/07/2009 21:23

Does she have any little girl 'toiletries'? Is she moisturising like mummy with something.

GiraffeAHolic · 22/07/2009 21:27

Ooh does she have a bath/hairwash straight before bed?

Could it be residual shampoo/bodywash/soap?

allaboutme · 23/07/2009 08:58

silly question, but have you asked her if she knows what the marks are? or where they might be coming from?
or get her to guess like in a game so she doesnt worry about being trouble if its something she is doing?

BooBooChicken · 23/07/2009 12:59

i don't use anything on her skin as she is sensitive to many soaps etc. so it's nothing coming off her skin.

i have asked her, in a kind of, "can you help us solve this puzzle?" and she is non-plussed, genuinely unaware of where this is coming from.

i have gone through all her soft toys/battery operated things and can find no leaks or colour transfer from anything.

maybe it will remain a mystery... [twilight zone emoticon..]

thanks all for your ideas. no more stains appeared this morning..

BooBooChicken · 27/08/2009 21:02

ps it WAS a leaking battery which we eventually found in a little snoring dog toy thing.

thanks, pelvicfloornomore! you were shown to be right and i no longer to need to worry that my dd is leaking!

BooBoo, I am so glad I've just seen this - I was only thinking about this this morning (the odd things we think about!) and wondering what happened.

Glad you solved it

Littlefish · 27/08/2009 21:06

Hooray for the power of mumsnet (and Pelvic!).

SwedesandTurnips · 27/08/2009 21:07

Is she being Tango'd?

BooBooChicken · 27/08/2009 21:19

pigeonpie, that's why i posted. i hate it when a thread intrigues you and goes unresolved!

Hi, just accessed this link to solve our own similar bed-stain mystery. I thought my wee boy was v ill. I had even spoken to GP about it as so worried why he was producing orange metallic-smelling liquid that wouldn't wash out of the fabric! She was also a bit puzzled...! No battery toys in bed at bedtime or wake-up time...It turned out he was taking a battery operated light into bed after lights out and the batteries were leaking! Only thing that got it out was Rust Remover from Stain Devils with a wash at 95 degrees. Chucked some bedding before we sussed this. Hope it's of help to anyone else with same probs! Will repeat on other posts in case...!
