HELP - DSD has a temp of 39.4 how do I bring it down???

PLease please help

DSD is 5, she has swine flu. We have given her calpol and neurofen and sponged her down with a damp tepid flannel. We are nigh on forcefeeding her fluids but nothing is budging her temp.

Any thoughts on what else we can do?

She is sleeping now with the duvet cover over her.

In case you are all wondering why I was MNing while she was so poorly, I was getting DH to do as much as possible as I am 33 weeks PG and am really hoping I can avoid the swine flu, unlikely though.

bratnav - yes let her sleep, yes put the sheet on her.

Hopefully her fever has peaked and will now descend over about four hours to a little over normal. Keep giving her analgesics to keep it down though.

I meant to say, I don't think we were judging. It wasn't a 'my child is bleeding a lot, should I wait and go to the GP in the morning' type post which makes everyone go .

Good luck to the lot of you.

Thanks WMMC

you poor thing, this swine flu is terrible. D1 has it and her highest temp so far has been 40.7 ! It's just incredible.
Tepid bath is the only thing which had any effect ime, although I have no idea whether it did actually have effect or if the fever cycle was about to change anyway. She has been up and down on am approx 4 hour cycle since Sunday night.

Btw don't give cold bath, as this can make body react to cold as if in shock and heat them up even more!

GP advised giving them ice cubes to suck on, or ice lollies as a way of egtting moisture in

DD has been sleeping under a very lightweight sarong

Perfectly sensible way to get advice quickly, hope you're all back to normal soon

JudyBlume1019 · 15/07/2009 23:01

Good luck btw, it's really frightening. Hope she's OK

BuckBuckMcFate · 15/07/2009 23:02

We have a DD (3) who becomes very ill very quickly with fever(also refuses fluids and has been hospitalised twice because of it)

I find that a dose of calpol, then 2 hours later a dose of ipobrufen ,then 2 hrs later calpol etc., is the only way to control her temp. No clothes except her knickers, a pram blanket (the ones with holes), damp flannels and ice lollys.

I keep her downstairs, not as stuffy as upstairs and can open more windows and doors if necc., and set the alarm on my mobile for every 2 hrs to make sure she gets her medicine if I manage to fall asleep.

It's horrible to see your child like that and I'm really feeling for you, especially as you're pg! Fingers crossed her temp will keep on dropping

Thank you all so much for the advice and positive vibes, am going to attempt to get some sleep now
