30 degrees in DD's room last night - what to do?

My little girl is nine months old and I'm really worried about the heat. She slept OK last night but all the room thermometers go red at about 22 degrees and I can't keep her room cool at the moment. I leave the blackout blind shut during the day to keep the sun out and leave the window open at night to try and let the air in. She's just in a nappy in her grobag (1.5 tog) at the moment - should I give up on the grobag? Is it worth try to get a fan to cool the room or am I just being neurotic?

My dd is 2.2, but has a fan on her at bedtime. Actually, the fan is on all of us!

Wheelybug · 01/07/2009 13:24

either give up on the gro bag or you can get 0.5 tog ones which are effectively just a sheet. And try a fan - I have read on here about putting ice infront of a fan too to get the cold air blowing around.

ditch the grobag or move her to a cooler room.

If she is sleeping through and not all sweaty and clammy it's probably fine though.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 01/07/2009 13:30

I would drop the grobag. DS is just in his nappy and a vest at the moment and he is sleeping fine. We have been putting him to bed a bit later so that it's 2/3 degrees cooler - his room had dropped from 30 to 27 by the time we put him to bed last night. We've also got a fan in there which we leave on all night.

PestoMonster · 01/07/2009 13:32

Please don't leave your fan on in there all night. It's too much of a fire risk. You would never forgive yourself. (I've just had the fire safety officer round)

My dd is 9 months and her room was 30 degrees last night, despite black out blinds closed and window open. She is just sleeping in a vest. She has a 0.5 tog gro-bag for when the temperature is a little cooler. The 0.5 ones are thin but our house is cosy so they work with sleepysuits well into the autumn.

sazlocks · 01/07/2009 13:36

I just put DS in a short sleeved vest and a thin sheet last night and he slept fine. He has a 0.5 tog but I think it sa bit warm for him.

Give up the growbag!
It's about 35 degrees here (Italy) and we are all just sleeping on top of the sheets in the nud.

Fans are horrid things- dry your throat out.

insertwittynicknameHERE · 01/07/2009 13:41

Do away with the grow bag and try a nappy and short sleeve vest.

DD 19mo goes to bed on top of the covers with only a nappy on, she has a light sheet also but kicks it off anyway. We put a fan on her while we are up still and then turn it off before we go to bed.

Her room was 27 degrees last night but she slept really well and didn't seem uncomfortable at all.

I however had a fan on me all night long.

30 degrees here last night. Ds1 slept naked and ds2 in just a nappy.

CMOTdibbler · 01/07/2009 13:44

Ds went to bed in the nude (he is 3), and I put a single cellular blanket over him at 10.30 and he was fine.

Wheelybug · 01/07/2009 13:48

really pesto (am following you around I think !) - Have always had fans on dd if hot. Why are htey are a fire risk out of interest? Thanks for tip ! Haven't had to resort to them here yet and won't if thats the case.

PestoMonster · 01/07/2009 14:08

I think it's just the risk of electrical stuff starting a fire. Personally I do use one in our dds' room, but I always go and turn it off when we go to bed. I certainly wouldn't leave it on all night.

The fire officer told me that it is not a good idea to run things like washing machines or dishwashers or other electricals overnight. Apparently they are well known sources of fire. DH works as a loss adjuster and won't let me do it either. He sees too many results of fires

Andlou · 01/07/2009 14:17

thanks everyone. Will ditch the grobag and go for a vest instead. Will see if I can find a cheap fan (where's Woolies when you need it?) but turn it off when we go to bed. We've been opening the door to her room when we go to bed but can't leave it open from bedtime because of the noise and we have cats who will be in and out the whole time if they had the chance!

Put her in a pillow case instead of grobag.
