Can you have chickenpox three times?

My DS has had chicken pox twice (both times confirmed by doctors). I didn't think you could get it twice but apparently you can. Today I've noticed he has come out in spots again aghh. Has anyone heard of a child getting it three times. He has no other symptoms no temp etc. I am hoping its heat rash but it looks suspiciously like the pox

I have heard of getting it twice. Was it extremely mild both times?

Tambajam · 29/06/2009 06:18

Yes - it's possible. A girl in DS's class had it once under 12 months, once at 2 (fairly mild) and is now just recovering at 5.5 from her 3rd case.

Yes, my Dd had it 3 times and then had shingles at 4, was not nice bless her.

I had it 4 years in a row as a child, 2 mild, 2 not so mild. Its rare but it does happen that you just don't get the immunity.

ds2 is 3 and has had it 5 times.

My daughter has had them 3 times then shingles n now she has chicken pox again now all confirmed by doctors n she’s only nine :(

lumpy76 · 20/08/2019 08:19

Yes a it's quite rare but some people just don't raise proper immunity to it. My eldest daughter (now 18) has had it twice. A bit like yours OP she had it very badly aged 3 and then more mildly aged 12 when 3 of her younger siblings had It for the first time. The youngest 2 children I chose to vaccinate privately for their sake, my sake and because we did wonder if, given exposure within the household again eldest DD would get it a third time. Eldest DD does have allergies (asthma, eczema, hay fever etc) and I have wondered if this has anything to do with things ie her immune reactions can be "off".
