have chamomile, anti histamine, bicarb etc, anything else? ds1 (3) has them awfully in the groin including crack of his bum etc really really not nice...Also has a sore throat...cant see any in his mouth though?

I think taking into account how bad a dose your ds1 has then i would say yes definately. I clung onto the wild hope that dd wouldn't get them but everyone assured me she would.
Ds picked at the ones on his face and he did have scarring, particularly on his forehead. I used bio oil religiously twice a day on the scars ( much to his disgust ) and now a year later you can hardly see them. It's expensive stuff but has been so worth it. It's so hard for them not to pick at the ones on their face, particularly when being called "scabby" on a regular basis at school ....

If he is swollen, are you using ant-histamine and brufen for this?

quirkychick · 22/06/2009 21:22

Oh mad4myboys I hope your ds gets better soon. Dd not too bad, except for groin ones. With you on the tearful/fragile front, though.

Another vote for Poxclin from Boots here! Did you manage to get hold of some...?

My DS1 was very ill with chicken pox for about a week in March - never seen him so unwell. DS2 had it first, had about 20 spots and was very jovial throughout! Thinking of yu though - it's horrid isn't it?

mad4myboys · 23/06/2009 19:57

no i didnt! BUT found that eurax cream PLUS the lotion togther have helped. He is alot btter today, mainly crabby.Been in the garden this afternoon. Is he still contagious if some have the yellow pus?

barnsleybelle · 23/06/2009 20:46

Yes, he is contagious until the last spot has scabbed over.
glad he's feeling better, time for you to muster up the energy for potential round 2!!!!

mad4myboys · 23/06/2009 21:04

joy! Really not looking forward to ds2 getting it! Any tips on dealing with babies with it???

Well dd was 9 months when she started after ds. She too had an horrendous bout and was poorly with it, temp etc, although she wasn't as poorly as ds.

I think it's sooo frustrating for them as they can't tell you and don't understand.

I smothered her in cream and kept her just in a nappy most of the time. When it came time for her to scratch at them i covered her in light cotton clothing.

Again i gave max dose of all she could have, lot's of cuddles when she wanted them. I found i put her in her cot every 2 hrs or so in the day as my cuddling her just drove her mad. She seemed to prefer laying mummy free!!! For sleep time when she was so uncomfortable i put her nappy on and just a lightweight low tog sleeping bag on.

mad4myboys · 23/06/2009 21:34

so dont put him in babygro then? At the mo he wears babygro (justthat if hot) or has 1 tog bag

I just put her nappy on and the light bag yes. I think the closer the fabric is to their skin the hotter and itchier they get as it traps warm air inside.
I remember ds (who was 6) went to bed starkers and just kind of tangled a sheet around himself.

misspollysdolly · 24/06/2009 22:23

Shout if DC2 does indeed get the dreaded pox - I have an opened but still mostly full can of Poxclin which I keep looking at thinkg 'what good can I do with that now...??!' I would gladly send it to anyone in need!! All 3 DCs can now cross Chickenpox off there to-do lists so it's going begging! It was extremely useful - especially when DS was at his most poorly, screaming in response to gloriously cold (in my opinion) calamine and with a groin full of spots. He tolerated the poxclin mousse when nothing else would do. Free to the first desperate mummy to shout!!

nkweto · 24/06/2009 23:39

may be too late..but aloe vera jelly also works wonders ! my 5 month and 2.5 LO's had chicken pox in May and we the aloe both relieved the itching and helped the blisters heal/scab...

it is horrible and barnsleybelle says it will pass...

Cloudspotter · 26/06/2009 11:05

Just wanted to say thank you for all the tips. Dd2 (3yo) has got it and we have been through 24 hours of hell together - feel very sorry for her with so many 'intimate' spots. Thankfully I have already got it under control with the help of all your advice.
