After DS1's temp of 39.9, DS2 now has one of 34.5

The playschool staff didn't feel he was himself today. He does look tired - up at 6 this morning and no afternoon nap this weekend. Says his tummy hurt and someone hit him there. The staff said he went very pale and said his tummy hurt.

Has just had some milk and cheese on toast. Temp was 34.2 so DH said do it again incase the battery was low and then it was 34.5.

Any advice?

DS2 is 4.

You're there with him and you know him better then anyone. DO you think he's ill? If you do, call the GP.

TripleTroubleMuffin · 15/06/2009 13:38

I feel like an idiot after the nurse talking to me tbh.

I have secret worries about DS1 so with him being ill and now DS2 not being himself and I do tend to panic a bit. Even the play school staff saying he wasn't 100% makes me more concerned.

I just don't know what to do.

Call the GP and get him an emergency appointment. Even if it's nothing and puts your mind to rest then it's worthwhile. An infection can cause a low temp so you do need to get him checked.

3littlefrogs · 15/06/2009 13:41

Please - take him to GP. Better safe than sorry.

I'm a nurse, and if my 4 year old had a low temp, looked pale, had tummyache and didn't like the light, and was sleepy, I would take him to the GP. Especially if his brother had recently had something that had caused a very high temp.

TripleTroubleMuffin · 15/06/2009 13:44

It is open at 2 or 4pm.

His temp is normal now.

Hard to have faith in the NHS when given info like that. I don't think she liked me saying I believed the thermometer.

better to be safe.

if they give you jip mention the light sensitivity.

TripleTroubleMuffin · 15/06/2009 14:04

I thought he didn't like it more because he had been asleep.

The problem I have is I want both boys seen really and I can't go until DS1 is out of school. Still ringing out.

Can't see anyone at the surgery so the receptionist is faxing the details to the out of hours doctors.

Just had a tiff with DH as he thinks I am over reacting again.

FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 15/06/2009 14:11

It's better to overreact and find out it's nothing then do nothing and find out it's meningitis or something.

TripleTroubleMuffin · 15/06/2009 14:15

Surely I wouldn't be given appointments if they felt they weren't needed though she did seem surprised that DS1 was at school.

I feel like I always get it wrong.

I want DS2 looked at so surely it makes sense for DS1 to be looked at too as they might have a similar thing?

FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 15/06/2009 14:17

It's OK. Wait and see what they say. I'd be tempted to collect DS1 early though and take him to the GP aswell if he's ill.

starshaker · 15/06/2009 14:17

my DD gets a very low temp, goes very pale can be sick and then wants to sleep. A little while later she is fine. They diagnosed her with petit mal which is a mild form of epilepsy. Basically its the result of a sezure without the actual convulsions

TripleTroubleMuffin · 15/06/2009 14:18

I have appointments for them both at 3.45pm.

FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 15/06/2009 14:20

Fab! Not too long to wait. Make sure he has plenty to drink in the mean time though

TripleTroubleMuffin · 15/06/2009 14:20

starshaker how would I know if that is what is wrong with DS2? And what if this GP dismisses his low temp like the NHS nurse?

TripleTroubleMuffin · 15/06/2009 14:21

Good point, Fluffy.

Off to make up fresh water bottles now.

My DSs normal temp is 34.5 so it is possible to have a temp that low. He has had febrile convulsions when his temp got to 38 so I do know his normal temp is low.

Next time you take your DSs temp you could do a quality control and check yourself too, that way you can tell the nurse your thermometer if working fine as you have checked it on yourself.

starshaker · 15/06/2009 14:27

She can be totally fine. Last time it happened she was running around playing with her friend. she stopped turned pure white and her legs nearly buckled. Picked her up and put her on the couch. she wasnt very responsive but got up was sick then lay down again. She was a really awful colour and an hour later she was up and running around. After the episode she had a temp of 34.5. This had happened a few times and each time i took her to A&E and they told me it was afebrile convulsion (basically a febrile convulsion without the temp) the last time it happened i told them i wasnt leaving until they found out what was wrong and thats when we saw the consultant and he said what i described was identical to what his son had and it was petit mal. She has since been for an eeg and am just waiting on the results.

TripleTroubleMuffin · 15/06/2009 14:39

When I took his temp when he was asleep it was 36.7 and mine was 37. She accepted the thermometer was working then but not for the 34.2/34.5 temps.

I am going to wake him in a few minutes, he would normally be getting up about now anyway.

The GP will probably say it is a virus and nothing to be given other than calpol and DH will be right.

FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 15/06/2009 14:59

If he's right then at least it's been checked. Don't beat yourself with a stick over this, I'd do the same if it happened again, even if it was nothing.

TripleTroubleMuffin · 15/06/2009 17:26

DS1 has tonsillitis and has been given penicillin.

DS2 has red tonsils but not tonsillitis.

Both have normal temps now.

Both okayed for school/playschool.

Probably over reacted wrt DS2 and wouldn't have taken DS1 as he seemed to be getting better.

Never knew that tonsillitis isn't infectious.

Nurse said if DS2 does get it, then DD too, then it is probably something viral and one can't do anything about that.
