How awful

You must complain.

Hope it never happens again

MrsFogi · 27/05/2009 23:29

That is awful - I hope you will be complaining. Were there not two nurses there etc etc.? What was she supposed to have and how old is she?
I would be livid.

jasper · 27/05/2009 23:31

my ds got an incorrect jag as a baby.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 27/05/2009 23:31

She was meant to get the pre school booster, she is 3.4, for tetanus, etc and ended up with the baby one which included the flu jab. The doctors had spent some time talking to various registrars in the local hospital to see whether it was dangerous before phoning us and letting us know. So she has thrown up and has a temp so will be on the phone tomorrow.

which baby jab has the flu jab though?

FiveGoMadInDorset · 27/05/2009 23:41

I think she was given the booster that she already has had when she was 18 months but will phone tomorrow for clarification.

get them t be clear. As far as I know no flu jab in baby jabs. Are they trying to cover themselves?

Sounds very odd - didn't know baby jabs included flu. Have a look on the department of health website, or NHS Choices, see if you can work out which one it must have been.

edam · 28/05/2009 09:17

do they mean HIB?

edam · 28/05/2009 09:19

(Hib sounds like 'flu but mainly causes meningitis and pneumonia. V. unlikely your dd would develop these from the jab, though.)

I bet they mean Hib (haemophilus influenzae type b), not flu.

TotalChaos · 28/05/2009 09:21

hope she's better today.

edam · 28/05/2009 09:22

World Health Organisation says Hib vaccine has 'almost no side effects'

OlympedeGouges · 28/05/2009 09:36

Yes I did wonder if they meant the Hib vaccine but I wouldn't be so worried about that. It is superfluous but something she'll have had before. Get them to clarify Five. Hope she's ok today.

CaptainKarvol · 28/05/2009 09:46

I'm NOT an expert, but did some work with the HPA, so had access to the literature for advising practice nurses etc on jabs.

Assuming you mean the HIB dose, IIRC, giving extra doses (eg if parents are unsure whether their child has been vaccinated or not, so potentially doubling up the dose) was fine, and giving the jabs outside of the normal time frame (eg if a child has been brought up in a different country and the parents want the UK immunisations for their child at a later date) was also fine.

None of this is relevant to individual reactions to a jab, but just a word of reassurance that recieving a normal childhood vaccine twice rather than once, or at a different age to normal, is not usually considered a problem at all.

I hope your DD is feeling better soon.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 28/05/2009 10:34

Thanks captainKarvol and all the rest she is fine today, slept very well, and having looked up on the internet I am guessing it was the HIB.

Do double check with the surgery, though. Make sure they tell you exactly what your daughter had.

lljkk · 28/05/2009 13:38

DH was extremely ill with pneumonia from HIb. I would be quite happy for DC to have an extra jab against it.
