DD12 has a sore wrist and we can't see the doctor until Thursday afternoon

Her wrist has been painful since Sunday afternoon, but she only got around to telling us last night when it was so painful she couldn't sleep .
I gave her ibuprofen but it didn't seem to have much effect.
However this morning it is still painful -although not tearfully so - and hurts when she moves her hand up and down. I spent a couple of hours trying to get through to the GP - finally succeeded at 11am and the next appointment they have is Thursday afternoon.
Should I take her to A&E or just make her wait? It is not an emergency, but I think she should see someone sooner than Thursday.

is there no walkin clinic where you live?

3littlefrogs · 26/05/2009 11:28

Walk in clinic, if you have one. GP is likely to suggest an Xray, so you might as well cut out the middleman.

FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 26/05/2009 11:31

GP can't ususlly send her for an x-ray unless it's been painful for 6 weeks or she's had an accident. It sounds like a muscular problem if it's painful when she moves it up and down rather then a boney problem. Ibuprofen should help as it's an anti inflamatory.

Has she fallen on it?

MichelleObama · 26/05/2009 11:57

She says she doesn't remember doing anything to it, but that it started to hurt after she came out of the sea on Sunday (she was bodyboarding). I have asked her if she wants me to take her to A&E but she says it is not so bad now as it was yesterday. She has been taking ibuprofen.
We don't have a walk-in clinic near us, just GP or A&E.
I am trying to get a fix on how bad it really is, every now and again she says it hurts and in between she seems to be fine and using her hand normally so I am wondering if she is just being a bit of a drama queen?

6 weeks??? No way.

I would A&E her straight away.

My DD had an xray within 2 days of hurting her arm.

have you got minor injury unit nearby

FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 26/05/2009 14:47

If it's after an injury then they will x-ray it alot faster then if something hurts for no reason. They have specific guidelines of what and when to request an x-ray and are not allowed to request them if there's not a good clinical need.

Could she have twisted/pulled in bodyboarding? any redness? Tenderness? Give it a poke and see if she jumps when you poke it in a certain place.
