my ds, age 8 has just been diagnosed with bxo
(Balanitis xerotica obliterans) and we've just been told that he needs to be circumsiced. i'm devastated...i don't know why...i'm trying to be positive..it needs doing, but obviously will involve going under GA and a week or two of soreness and recovery. i could cry..he's already had to have surgery twice before and it was just awful waiting for him to come around afterwards...

anyone got any experience or reassurance?

Singstar
thanks for pointing me in direction of your other post; there were some helpful replies about GA and what to expect. We are still awaiting a second opinion before we proceed, but yes, we will probably have to get ds circumcised. Conservative approach using a steriod cream for 4 weeks initially looked hopeful as his foreskin opening enlarged slightly and his urine flow was much better, but within a week of stopping the cream, everything reverted back to how it was. ...almost fused together with what looks like white scar tissue just inside.

I think what I'm also finding hard to accept is the idea that a true BXO diagnosis cannot be confirmed until after they've cut of his foreskin and sent it to histology. I hate the idea that we may later find out that the circumcision was not strictly necessary. Still, I understand that BXO can spread and be more serious, so if that's what is recommended after this next referral then we will do it; I don't want to make things worse by delaying for too long. Fortunately DS is not in any discomfort at the moment and having no problems with infections so far. Infact he seems to be rather pleased with being able to give his ballooning willy an extra squeeze and shot his wee out at high pressure jet speed ...noticed this during lots of outdoor peeing whilst camping etc over the summer!!

I do hope it all goes smoothly for your little one and you can stop the boistrous power rangers games for a few days so he can recover!

How old is your DS btw? Mine's 4 1/2, just starting school. Do let us know how you got on.

Hi, sorry took so long to reply been one of those manic weekends - mine is 3.5 just started nursery and he's refusing to go to the toilet at school as he's embarrased which has made me even more convinced we've made the right decision (hopefully !!) I'll let you know how he gets on. Take care

Hey singstar
ditto. sometimes I have a flurry of mumsnet activity and manage to make it on-line for a few days in a row and then nothing for weeks! Hope the Op went OK for your little one and he is recovering well.
