Orthoptist appointment for 3.5yr old tomorrow-what to expect?

JoeJoe1977 · 20/05/2009 20:37

DS1 is going to the local hospital tomorrow afternoon for an assessment by an Orthoptist, this is to check if he has a slight squint or not.

Could someone give me an idea what to expect so I can brief him tomorrow morning?

TIA

If this is his first visit then it may just be a series of eye tests (special ones for young children - don't worry, he won't need to read all the letters!)

However be prepared for the possibility that he may want to put eyedrops in to dilate the pupil and get a better look. if so, this can sting a bit and your DS may get a bit upset. Not sure whether I would tell him this or not to be honest?

DS is nearly 2 and has been going every few months for a year or so. He gets to look at some flash cards, point to some pictures and follow some squeaky toys as she waves them around. He might get to wear some cool shades

DS did have the eyedrops thing the first time but tolerated it fine, although we were warned he might find bright light uncomfortable for a while. It's nothing to worry about - it will be a lot like a game.

Thankyou for such a prompt reply, glad that I am prepared for the possibility of eye drops, but agree that it may be best not to include that in his brief!

I agree with others re tests and eye drops. Has she been seen in the community by an orthoptist or is this her first orthoptist appointment? (If so, unlikely to have eye drops.)

Both of mine have squints, and I had to wear glasses as a child because of my squint for two years. Now nearly 40 and still have 20-20 vision.

First appointment this afternoon, have briefed him before he went off to nursery this morning. Have also spoken to nursery and they are going to chat about it in circle time this morning and do a story about visiting the hospital.

Referral is because of a strong family history of squint and when he is tired his left eye does turn in slightly when trying to focus on something close.

Thanks
