DS is 22 months and started vomiting and diarrhoea on Saturday. He stopped vomiting but has had diarrhoea since then, and today has been sick again twice. He's barely eating, but is drinking watery orange juice and breastmilk. He's fairly cheery most of the time but definitely isn't himself, and he's been waking up in the night roasting hot (I've given him Nurofen a couple of times for this).

He seems OK in himself but is definitely skinnier than he was a few days back. I don't know if I should pester the doctor tomorrow or not. It seems like a long time for a bug to go on for, and DP and I are OK.

TBH its not that long ..... it just seems it when you're dealing with both ends constantly!

Sounds like you're doing everything just right - keeping him hydrated, offering fluids etc. These things can take 10 days to clear up.

So long as DS continues to drink plenty of fluids and also gets some sugars and salts then the bug should work its way out (eeew)

Just to let you know that my DS has had this kind of thing twice in the last 6 months and refused to drink the rehydration powders. My GP reassured me by saying that it was fine to add a tiny bit of salt and some sugar to foods or to drinks!

Thanks for the reassurance. He's fairly bright so it's not desperately worrying, just does feel like a long time, as you say.

As long as he's not dehydrated (look for wet nappies and that he has enough saliva to lick you!) he should be fine, I think. But there's never any harm in pestering a doctor for a young child if you're worried, imo.

Thanks again. He ate this morning, just some porridge but it stayed down, then he demanded lunch and after one slice of toast he was shouting "More toast, more toast!" so I was really chuffed. Then when he went for a nap he woke with an explosive nappy-busting poo reminiscent of the heady days of exclusive breastfeeding, and he was hot and shivery. I'm going to phone the doctor when they open after lunch - I tried NHS 24 but the message made it sound like they were only interested in emergencies ...
