2.10 yr old constantly tired - any ideas?

DS1 seems to have been constantly tired since last Wednesday/Thursday - he did have a cold/cough then so I assumed it was that but the cold has pretty much gone but his tiredness is getting worse

He dropped his daytime nap 6 months ago but since Saturday, he has been having 2+ hour long naps and still sleeping normally at night. He has also been displaying other behaviour (pretty much constantly) which usually mean he is tired or ill - unusual naughtiness, clinginess to me, whinging etc. He turned round this morning and told me, in a really upset manner, that he didn't want DS2 anymore and could we throw him in the bin!! (Btw, DS2 is 6 months so I don't think it is a reaction to his birth - although the symptoms are quite similar to when DS2 was born)

Tonight, after a day at nursery with no nap, he fell asleep on the landing floor whilst I was running the bath for DS2 (he had already decided he didn't want a bath and had his PJ's on) after crying and whinging for 10 minutes. He has never done this before and, in fact, all weekend, he has ended up falling asleep where he has been (after refusing to go to bed) which is also very unusual - he has always gone to bed for his naps before.

Any ideas - growth spurt maybe? Would you go to the doctors - or how long would you let it continue before you would go to the doctors? I guess I am hesitating as he is showing no other signs of illness so not sure what they could check for.

I'm not an expert, but as a general rule I would say that if you are worried then see a doctor. There's no right length of time to wait so you might as well go - hopefully they will be able to put your mind at rest.

keep a sleep diary for a week or two. We are currently keeping tabs on just how much boy sleeps, returning to Drs if he remains this tired another 2 weeks as then it will have been 2 months. GP Have already had him checked for diabities and anemia.

Thanks for the advice.

UniS I assume your DS has been the same - how much does he sleep? How long did you leave it before you took him to the doctors?

My 4yr old went through really similar thing a couple of months ago - he was absolutely exhausted and would literally fall asleep were he was - shops, kitchen table, middle of trampoline! It went on for about 3-4 weeks and we were really worried (especially as he'd had pnuemonia about 6mths before). The drs out him through lots of tests and they came back clear. They just said it was a really nasty virus that has been doing the rounds. Its horrible while it last but hopefully thats just what your little one has and they'll be fine in a couple of weeks.

we took DS ( age 3.2) to Drs after about 6 weeks of him sleeping a lot. 12 + hours over night and then a 2-3 hour nap as well most days. He would sleep all morning only waking about 10-11am. Was asking to go to bed mid afternoon if I had woken him at 8am.

I kept the sleep diary for about 10 days before the inital Drs vist, am still keeping it as we decide weather to return to DRs.
The sleep diary was teh decider about taking him to GP, I was thinking he was just at teh long end of normal sleep ( 10-14 hrs out of 24 for this age group or so I'm told) . The record showed me DS was sleeping more like 15-17 hours a day.
We have had periods of 1-2 weeks in the past when he has slept a lot and they have co-incided with his growing a cm or so. So teh first few weeks I assumed DS was "just growing again"
