Poor little dd has a urine infection and has been so poorly can I give her cranberry juice?

I'm sure that's what the old ladies used to say was naturally good. Is there any reason I couldn't give her cranberry?

I feel so dreadful as she's been so cranky since last Thursday (terirble fever and sobbing)and I only took her to the doctors today [really crap mum emoticon]. She has been given antibiotics and I have to give her paracetamol for her raging temps.

I thought she was teething I feel so awful.

Does anybody know when she might be back to her usual sunny self? I hate to see her so upset.

The ABs should kick in by tomorrow. And yes you can give her cranberry juice. Any fluid is good, though the clearer the better.

Hope she feels better soon.

Poledra · 18/05/2009 14:30

I don't know how old she is, but my DD had a UTI at 2.5 yrs old. I gave her cranberry juice mixed with some apple juice and water, as I felt the cranberry alone was a bit too sharp for her. She's now 5, and she and her sister both drink cranberry and apple as their favourite juice!

I don't know if it did her any good, but it made me feel like I was doing something to help. Oh, and my DD's UTI was pretty bad before I realised what it was - it was the smell of her urine eventually that made me realise she was poorly (sorry if TMI).

luvaduck · 18/05/2009 14:32

how old is she??

cranberry juice can work for preventing urine infections but there is no evidence it treats it.

It won't do any harm if shes old enough but antibiotics are your best bet.

did they send a urine sample to the lab do you know? I would expect her fever to come back to normal and start to feel better within a day or so (it can be a lot quicker) but occasionally there is resistance to the antibiotic and another one needs to be prescribed. For this reason if she is getting worse not better, and isn't starting to improve over the next few days call the GP back

good luck!

Oh your poor dd. Mine had UTI at similar age (first we knew of it was a febrile convulsion ). It is horribly painful and the temperature spiking is so uncomfortable for them. Sympathies to your DD.

Yes, cranberry juice is fine to give but it won't specifically help.

Cranberry extract will though, I think, but hardly worth the faff as AB's will kick in by tomorrow.

Cranberry juice you buy won't give her any relief as it has sugar in etc. BUT, just to get her drinking and fluids going through is the best thing really.

Will she drink it diluted? I give DD and DS (20 months) cranberry but a third to 2 thirds water.

Kewcumber · 18/05/2009 14:40

my mother had bladder cancer which caused persistent UTI's - consultant recommended cranberry powder mixed with water or a littel juice form health food shop taken last thing at night (more time in bladder to work if you drink it at night apparetnly).

There is evidence that cranberry can help cure UTI's teh juice has somethin gin it which stops the bacteria sticking to the bladder walls.

luvaduck · 18/05/2009 14:46

there is evidence that it can prevent UTIs but NOT treat once they have taken hold

will try and find a link for you

Lots of water or very dilute lemon barley.Cranberry works as a preventative by lining the bladder so that the bugs can't stick and I was told that it can stop the anti biotics getting through so best not to risk it.I have one atm and it is miserable so must be dreadful for a little one

Megglevache · 18/05/2009 15:54

I read Kewcumber's typo as it had gin in it and thought blimey GIN

Thanks so much for the wealth of info.

She's just turned two and it's a constant battle to get her to drink anything. She used to have water every now and then but her intake is pretty rubbish a bit of diluted lemon/orange when she can.

Her wee smells awful and yesterday looked a rusty orange colour!

fairimum · 18/05/2009 16:03

if it hurts for her to wee they sometimes hold it in, maybe see if you can get her to wee in the bath?

love the ice lollies!!

Megglevache · 18/05/2009 16:04

no evidenc that cranberry juice is useful in treating or relieving hte symptoms of uti. best bet is lots of lfuids ot dilute the urine and thus help releive the burning pain when weeing. if it is really hurting sit her in the bath let her play/splash etc and she will probably wee then as the water elaxes the sphincter ( valve holding wee in) and the water will wash it off her genetala quickly so reduce stinging HTH

Megglevache · 18/05/2009 16:12

brilliant I'll make sure she has extra long in the bath tonight and keep an eye on her over the next few days.

I really appreciate all the info

History of UTIs in my family and we always drink a half-teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda in a glass of water.

Tastes VILE, but usually gives relief within a couple of hours.

Please check this with your GP though as I don't know whether it is contraindicated by your DD's antibiotics (or indeed if it's safe for little ones - advice has probably changed since I was a child in the 70s!)

Megglevache have you had a UTI yourself? Description if not - feels a little bit like a paper cut inside the urethra which stings badly. When having a wee, there is often a tiny bit of relief at the beginning and thenas the wee finishes there can be a very sharp pain. You feel the need to go constantly and the pain can radiate around the bladder & pelvis.

The best thing is to be distracted - let her have her favourite books/DVDs etc. Let her be knickerless, e.g. a nightie with no underwear, as tights/trousers can irritate it. Hot water bottle to hold between the legs helps, too.

The antibiotics should be giving some relief by tomorrow. Poor thing, I hope she feels better soon.

GentlyDoesIt · 18/05/2009 16:17

Sorry just read that she is 2 and therefore probably in nappies; still let her air her vulva as much as possible. She's probably having her biggest pains when she wees, but in a nappy this will be harder to spot.

Megglevache · 18/05/2009 16:20

Yes I took her nappy off all of yesterday and she peed (mainly on me) that's when I could tell she was in pain whilst actually urinating (I thought maybe she was sore from teething/nappy rash)
She slept with me last night on a wee proof sheet and then towel, again the girl has good aim and by the morning I was well and truly in the wet patch. Ewww TMI.

It is v painful to pee it burns and stings but bicarb or lemon barley neutralises the wee and stops the sting It works fast too.Agree about the bath too plain water no bubbles at all.Poor little thing she will be back to herself in a few days but if she isn't take her back esp if her wee is a rusty colour.

And Megglevache well done, it sounds like you are going out of your way to make her comfortable. Maybe ask something to pick up some of those large pads designed for older children who aren't always dry at night? Could make for an easier, drier night in bed.

GentlyDoesIt · 18/05/2009 16:39

sorry meant some one, not something!

mummydoc · 18/05/2009 16:58

also should add antibiotics for utis usually kick in fairly quickly ( well according to most of my patients!) so by tomorro wshould feel a we ebut better ( sorry for pun)
