New born...wind? reflux? tummy bug? dairy?

Baby is now 12 days old. She is getting increasingly miserable during the day. I wear her in a sling and demand feed but whenever she is off the breast she is writhing in discomfort. Twice she has comfort fed to the point of vomiting.

My son had a tummy bug on and off from when I was 39 weeks pregnant to last week (have at last had 7 whole days without vomiting or diarrhoea) DH had it for about a fortnight and while I haven't had it to the same degree I have had gripes in the gut and some diarrhoea. My gripes are still there but otherwise everyone is over the bug but maybe baby has it, some of her writhing will cease when she explodes out the back end which is after every feed???

DS was dairy intolerant and had severe reflux as a baby which lasted for a gruelling amount of time. He tended to arch and fuss at the breast, vomit prolificly and scream the rest of the time which is a bit different to what dd is doing. She tends to writh around and cry out intermittently in all positions including sling, over shoulder etc, cry if laid down, have small spits except for the two vomits mentioned before so not sure if this could be a factor (would be reluctant but not totally against giving up dairy again as I am a vegetarian and this would make me vegan for the next 18months which was pretty hard with breastfeeding.)

Or could it simply be wind, have tried every method for helping her expell it I know but things getting worse not better.

Due to see midwife on Thursday so will run all this past her too but getting desperate to help my little one.

Sorry about mammoth post and thanks in advance a miserable mini monster.

thanks hana, it is different to how ds presented but do you think it does sound like reflux?

thanks, we used a private specialist in the end with ds but will try and get in at gp tomorrow and see how we go, don't like my chances of getting an appointment at our surgery though. Weirdest thing is totally unlike ds, she is mostly miserable during the day and seems to be doing fairly well at night with 3-4 hour sleeps without a problem. During the day she just groans and cries and writhes after feeds and will sleep very restlessly on me in short bursts...maybe she is just exhausted by the time night time comes but definately with ds, nights were worst.

maybe worth trying colief (this helps baby digest the lactose in the milk - if it was the lactose your son had a problem with?)

yawningmonster · 20/05/2009 03:33

thanks fairimum, ds had allergy to the protein in cows milk but willing to explore all options.

I would take her to a cranial osteopath, and if that doesn't work then give up dairy for 2 weeks, which should be long enough for you to work out whether it's the problem or not. The symptoms can vary, so don't rule it out just because it's diff from how your ds was.
