Is this a symptom of a chest infection?

Ds3 has had a very phlegmy cough for nearly a week - no other symptoms. It has not been feeling ill with it until last night. Now he clearly has a temperature and is off his food, lethargic etc. He has just told me that when he coughs (still very phlegmy) it hurts in his back. Is this a symptom of a chest infection? I was already suspecting he might have one because of the temperature.

Don't get me wrong, I am not using MN instead of seeing a doctor. I will be ringing up for an appointment first thing tomorrow if he is no better, but while I am idly sitting here with a miserable little boy, I thought I would ask about him on MN.

Yep it sure sounds like it. Can you take him to OOH as these things can make children ill quite quickly when they are little and if he needs ab's then that means he is getting them quicker., I wouldd take him to ooh if he has a temp tbh. If it was me anyway, Hope he feels better sooon.

I would consider OOH too. Obviously you are the one with your DS, so only you really knows how unwell he is, but it does sound like he may have developed an infection.

Yes sounds like the "classic" symptoms to me. Honey and warm fluids always helps DD in this state.

Thanks. He is not little little iyswim. He is 6. But he does seem quite bothered now by the pain. I am just about to give him more calpol.

I would def phone ooh, it could be a long night if he is really poorly and in pain.

TotalChaos · 17/05/2009 17:19

when I had a chest infection last winter the pain was all in my back rather than my chest. agree with the other posters.

Yes definatley sounds like infection. (Says me who is a kinda expert on these things) i would call OOH.

I hope your DS feels better soon.

Well, we went to the out of hours docs. Saw a lovely GP - mother of 2 chn herself. Ds3 does not have a chest infection but she reassured me it had been worth coming in just to eliminate the possibility.

In the perverse way of things, ds3 now seems a bit brighter and has eaten some toast and honey and milk. So all in all, I feel reassured. Thanks for the suggestions that I ring the doc.
