22 month old always wakes up with a cough - is this still silent reflux

DS2 sleeps well all night although we had huge problems for his first year with silent reflux and lactose intolerance. Anyway, for the last few months I've noticed ( his room has an interconnecting door to mine) that he coughs just before he wakes up. He doesn't have a cold or cough during the day and he doesn't cough during the night. I just wondered if this was still some kind of reflux ?

Does he cough before waking up naturally in the morning, or before waking up in distress for some reason in the middle of the night? If it's just in the morning, it might be he's clearing phlegm as he wakes up, and has catarrh/phlegm which is usually caused by dairy products, and sometimes other foods.

Meanwhile, my dd who's 13 months is in agony every single night, fine during the day, and has been put on Ranitidine for suspected silent reflux, but she's quite old to have it and she's been on it a few days and seems worse if anything. How long should it take to start working? Last night no sleep at all.

oh dear - i think ranitidine takes a while to work from memory - give it a week before you give up. I think for some babies it doesn't work but fingers crossed it will kick in soon.
As for Ds2 - I am not sure if it is phlegm but he has very little dairy as is lactose intolerant.

i would suggest ALL dairy is cut out, if there is an allergy /intolerance even the smallest amount can cause mucus that trickles down the back of the throat and will cause a cough. All of us in my family are dairy very intolerant.. so have learnt the very hard way.... Luckily today there is more at your disposable to help eliminate dairy. good luck.
