my 6 week old baby has been given losec mups- we have been told to put the 10mg tablet in 10mls of cooled boiled water, once dissolved, to draw up 3 mls & give it to her... however, it does not fully dissolve!! I have researched this on the web & it says that the bits that are not dissolved are microcapsles & that these are what are needed to go into the tummy... how the hell do I know im drawing up the right amount of these into the syringe?? she will either be getting too much or too little? how do i know how much of these capsules are in the liquid..if any??? as these seem to sit at the bottom & are impossible to draw up?

How do i get it in liquid form?? whats it called

thank u in advance

Don't know about losec, omeprazole, as I was given Lansox, lanzoprazole, which did dissolve in 2 seconds.

This forum has a quite active section about infant reflux (found under Parenting, in the middle). www2.everybody.co.nz/forum/. or try this web site www.cryingoverspiltmilk.co.nz

oops, got to go

They don't dissovle and you can't get a liquid form, i think you would have to get a different medication.

If it helps what we do with the MUPS is.

Break the tablet in half then put it into the tube of the syringe, then put the plunger in then draw up the 3ml of water, then put your finger over the end on the syringe and shake like mad, then it will be as dissolved as it can be, then you can just squirt it into her mouth and you will know she has got all of it.

I hope that makes sense.

We were given losec with ours initially- a right pallaver. Went back to the doctor and got given gaviscon sachets. It was an absolute dream. (losec didn't seem to work, but gaviscon did). Never looked back

if i break the tablet in half, then that becomes a 5mg pill... so if i would have to put 5mls of water with it to get the right concentration (1ml=1mg).. so the problem still remains that i only need 3ml's... when i draw it up in the syringe you get clomps of power in it.. there is no way i can know shes getting enough of the capsules or too much.. its a real worry...
if she were on 5mg- then it would be fine- I could break the pill in half & out with 5mls of water & cos i would be giving her ALL the solution & therefore all the microcapsules..

im really worried about this- i have read sites saying you can get a liquid- just dont know how to go about it

Can you dissolve it in the syringe in 5ml water. Then shake like made and discard 2 mls quickly (or shake and discard 1ml then shake and discard 1 ml). Then give her the remaining 3mls.

I didn't think there was a liquid form as I thought it was inactive as a suspension (hence the individual indissolveable capsules) but I remember seeing on here that there might be a generic that is available as a suspension. I will try searchin the archives for you.
