Ds1 has got impetigo, so how long do you think he'll be off school for?

Noticed it on his face Weds night, and took him to the GP Thursday morning. He's been prescribed oral ab, fucidin cream, and Neseptim(sp?) for his nose. GP also said that he shouldn't be in school until it clears.
However, I spoke to the Head as soon as we came out of dr, and he said that ds would be ok to go back to school on Monday, as long as all the affected areas had scabbed over.

Wwyd?

some info here

its highly contagious so really should not be in school until its cleared. If he picks the scabs he can still spread the infection.

When my ds has it i keep him off till it has completely cleared up. He is at residential school and they wont have him back till it is completely healed!

My son had a bad case of impetigo last year (didn't realise he had it so was at school with original sore on neck!). Doctor advised him that Ok to go back to school once scabs appeared. Spoke to school and they agreed this would be OK provided he didn't pick them! So I sent my son to school as he was otherwise Ok except for nasty looking scabs x

Thanks for your replies.

I had already had a look at the NHS. Think the bit that confused me most was where it says "Most people are no longer contagious after 48 hours of treatment or once their sores have dried and healed"

The small spots have dried up already, but he's got a nasty patch about the size of fingernail above his lip. Think I'll see what it's like on Monday, and have a chat with the school.

Bless him, he's only been off school 2 days, and keeps asking why he can't go.

HPA Guidance

Impetigo: Until lesions have crusted or healed.

It's a really useful document - official advice of school and nusery exclusion for lots of childhood illnesses.

Thank you for that link. Makes sense, as I think thats what the Head meant. They are healing very well - most of them have crusted over (sorry tmi)
