Piriton? Bathe in water with porridge oats in (tied up in the foot of a pair of tights).

Poor thing he has my sympathy.

charlieandlola · 15/05/2009 20:42

Medised has some anti histamine in it. Either that, or Piriton. Also loads of Nurofen. make a paste out of porridge oats and put it on more sensitive parts. Calamine lotion, imho, dries the skin out and makes the itching worse. Chill flannels in the freezer. Ice cubes to suck. Poor little thing.

duckyfuzz · 15/05/2009 20:43

definitely piriton, and GP too probably, DT2 was v poorly with chicken pox and had ABs, it can be v nasty

Stinkermink · 15/05/2009 20:46

Calamine with aqueous cream is the best. You can buy it from the chemist and it soothes the spots without drying out an making it more itchy. Also piriton. May knock him out, but sleep is good! Poor little thing . Agree with everything else especially the porridge oats, frequent luke warm baths, distracting and comfortable.

alibobins · 15/05/2009 20:46

the ceritizine is a strong antihistamine. He's had a bath with dermol bath ointment in.
He keeps nodding off only to wake crying
It's a horrible illness he's got well over 100 spots on his face alone

I'd check with a pharmacist/doctor before you give him Piriton on top of cetirizine as they're both antihistamines.

A cool bath with oatmeal can be helpful too.

DaisyOinkSwiner · 15/05/2009 20:48

Sorry, x-posted, you know about cetirizine.

Stinkermink · 15/05/2009 20:49

Sorry didn't see the cetirizine comment. If you can alternate calpol and nurofen for a day to give him some respite and make him feel better that might help.

alibobins · 15/05/2009 20:50

This is day 3 and more keep on coming when will they stop?

Yeah same ds think he is just unlucky.
He's only just finished antibiotics on tuesday for tonsillitis and on wednesday got the pox!!

My DD1 had it like that.

I gave her Piriton instead of Cetirizine as it has slightly more sedating properties so helped her sleep a bit better.

Put sodium bicarb powder in the bath and leave off the cream as it can actually dry out the skin and make it itch more.

Also give REGULAR paracetamol and ibuprofen, and let him eat or drink what he wants - my DD enjoyed lots of ice poles as they soothed her spotty throat.

Keep him cool, not sponging but maybe a fan, and soft cotton sheets. Let him be naked if he's more comfortable.

My DD had massive spot eruptions that lasted about 4-5 days but once they finished coming out they dried up fairly quickly.

Hope he's better soon.

tryingtobemarypoppins · 15/05/2009 21:00

OP I had my son vaccinated against the pox. As your LO has had it so badly, I would consider having your other children vaccinated - just my opinion so feel free to ignore! Hope he is better soon and your not to tired!

alibobins · 15/05/2009 21:05

I asked Gp about vaccinations the other week as ds is quite often on steroids (not at mo) and steroids and chicken pox don't mix.
Gp said he would look into it to see if he could have it as he's got allergies
Too late now

I agree with herbietea, take him to out of hours in the morning, DT2 is asthmatic, she suffered horribly with chicken pox, couldn't even stand up poor thing. Hope he manages to to sleep

Piffpaffpoff · 15/05/2009 21:32

I'd second the Calamine aqueous cream recommendation. DS had the pox when he was 10mo on top of bad baby eczema and this was the only thing that seemed to give him relief. He had spots everywhere (and I do mean everywhere!) and I just slathered this on every few hours. Went through about 3 pots of it but it really seemed to help.

alibobins · 16/05/2009 12:14

Ds just wouldn't settle so ended up going to out of hours they did say given ds history he should have been given anti virals but it was too late for them to make any difference now
He prescribed antibiotics and phenergen to use tonight if he is still as bad.
At the moment he is managing ice pops and has eaten a yogurt and the spots seem to be scabbing over.
He is still unsettled just lying on the sofa moaning on and off
Hopefully he is over the worse
